Carb Balance Gadgets....

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by doetnietcomputeren, Apr 9, 2009.

  1. A colleague in the US is looking to buy a doofer to help him balance his
carbs (BMW R1100) and came across this: http://www.carbtune.com/

Anyone got anything to say for or against? Any other recommendations?

    Cheers

I've got the older mercury unit. I've owned it for many years, IIRC, I
    bought it in 1991.

So easy to use even a shit for brains like me can cope with it. If the steel
rod version is only half as good as the mercury one has proven to be, its a
    no-brainer.

Happy to recommend the Carbtune, it's a quality product and the guys that
run the company are very helpful.

They donated one of the original (mercury-filled) jobbies when we first
opened The Workshop (see sig.) and later upgraded to the spring/slider
model. The latter has the advantages of not having to be kept upright,
indeed for some applications it works best inverted, and not having
poisonous material inside that could escape.

The items were among the most frequently used gadgets in The Workshop and
survived a lot of abuse, unlike a set of gauges that cost over 3x as much
    and lasted only two weeks.

I've got one of their early ones and use it on the R80 . It's brilliant.

Carb balancing is a lot easier on the R80 than on an R1100 though,
    mainly because it has some.

  8. That's why they have damper screws, or at the very least, damper clamps
    on the hoses.

I used some 8 meter long plastic tubing thrown over the garage rafters with
a little colored water in it for balancing the carbs. Worked very well,
probably better than the Carb-Tune or electronic TwinMax gizmo I have, and I
eventually nailed the u-shaped portion onto a 2 meter wooden plank. Upper
ends go to the throttle body on each side of the BMW R engine.
