If I were to, say, actually posess a normal car - perhaps a 3 y/o VW Golf
or Vauxhall Astra - how much would I be looking at in depreciation and
running costs (excluding fuel and insurance). Servicing, depreciation,
tyres that kind of thing - based on 5000 to 6000 miles a year.

Actually, how much does a three year old Golf/Astra cost?

Depends entirely on what you mean by servicing. If you stick to the
manufacturer's service schedule & pay a dealer to do it, then lots. If
you just change the oil/filter every 8k miles, & do the cambelt when
required, virtually nothing (& it'll most likely last a lot longer).
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/ You can specify the age to give you an
    idea of depreciation.

Someone posted an xls file from the AA which captured depreciation,
running costs etc in the last month or so. CBA to google it though.
