It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "sweller" Amazing. You'd think the designers had never done a train before. -- Dave GS 850 x2 / SE 6a SbS#6 DIAABTCOD#16 APOSTLE#6 FUB#3 FUB KotL OSOS#12? UKRMMA#19 COSOC#10
Eeeeeeeeh lad they don't make 'em like they used to in't olden days. And next week on Sweller's Historical Railways - Why it was much more fun doing collective bargaining with the BRB than those bastards at Govia.
It's not that they haven't made them well it's the materials they've used that are unsuitable. We've already had all the carriage key locks replaced - the metal was too soft; the driver's seats have started collapsing and the rise in general material failures (relays, switches and the like). The problem is the usual: Built to a price rather than with stuff that can cope with the railway - which as you can appreciate is a harsh environment. Oh, it's much more fun with this lot. Although CH appears to have become 'determined' over the issue of Drivers and name badges. Should prove good sport.
Yebbut I imagine 300Ds will drop in price considerably when the 350D makes an appearance. Could actually be worth waiting a couple of months.
S' a funny thing; I've got a 300D and an EOS50 (bought secondhand when pissed a couple of years back); and although I always use the 300 out of preference, I'm always glad when I get to use the 50. It seems to me like the money on the 300 goes on the recording media rather than the camera itself. The 50 seems better made, nicer handling and generally sllicker. The 300 produces wonderful results and wonderful images, but the film camera rocks - if you feed it the right film - and is just nicer to use. -- Stan Stannard - Grimsby, UK "Statto's evil twin" ANORAK#01 BONY#57 UKRMSBC#01 Kawazaki ZZR1100D
YOu can already get them for £499 [1](from PCWorld of all places) - how low do you want it to go? [1] which after the rebate is what I paid for mine from Amazon.
£449 (body only) or £495 (with Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens) from 7DayShop.com http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_4_409_40901&products_id=95233 http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_4_409_40901&products_id=91362 These guys are in the Channel Islands so anything under £18 is VAT-free. Good for batteries, flash memory, CD/DVD media, torches and other bits-n-bobs This is a great little widget but don't try taking it on a plane... http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=&products_id=88567 BTW I don't have any connection with this company, other than being regular customer for the past couple of years.
C'mon guys, when I checked before posting this morning they had 38 of these in stock. Now get a message back from a mate to say they are "sold out". Is that the power of ukrm or just a coincidence? 'fess up, who bought 30+ in one go?
Try here http://stores.ebay.co.uk/UR-Galaxy-Ltd-Photo-Electronics_W0QQssPageNameZl 2QQtZkm as he's normally cheaper than anyone else.
I doubt Canon would allow that to happen as it would kill off their film models. But I could be wrong.
Bear scribbled on the back of a napkin: I don't think so - they still sold a rather large number of film cameras and I'd say that film and digital can probably co-exist happily for quite some time. The thing about film cameras is that they are pretty mature, whereas with digital cameras every new generation still has worthwhile improvements. On that basis you'll sell a lot more digital cameras than film cameras...
Unless your customers sit there waiting for the price to go down. "I'm not buying that now, it'll be 50% less in 3 months - look what they did with the 300D"

'Cos you really do need to know how to use a camera to get a truly good B&W shot, and the vast majority of camera users these days are point and shoot merchants. Champ scribbled on the back of a napkin: Hmm? Almost ceased? Where did you get that nugget from? What has admittedly ceased is the production of several specialist films like Agfa APX25, Kodak Tech Pan and (I *think*) Ilford SFX200. Most of the usual suspects are still available - I should know as I buy B&W films fairly regularly from specialist retailers. Your local Jessops may not stock much anymore though... And if the honourable gentleman is referring to Ilford being in administration, may I refer him to: http://www.ilford.com/html/us_english/pr/PRht.html Plus there are quite a lot of older-style films available now that are being manufactured in the former Eastern Block countries. The developer may smell funny but it ain't dead yet. That said, what has ceased is most of the research going into developing improved B&W emulsions and chemistry, but that's been the case for quite some time now.
