Canon EOS300D

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Corfield, Mar 4, 2005.

  1. This is really a question for our resident photographers.

Anyone aware of any problems with the EOS300D? Mine has just decided
that it doesn't want to work anymore. Recharged the battery, had another
battery placed in the camera in a shop to test it out - zilch.

And guess who can't find the bloody receipt for the thing?

From what I've read they seem(ed)pretty bullet proof...
They have just released a new version - the 350D - maybe it's an autoupgrade
    feature :)

Obvious stuff but check the battery contacts inside the camera body are
    clean.
Has the camera had a knock or been subjected to excessive moisture?
Do you use the optional battery-grip? If so, have you tested the camera &
    battery without the grip?
A long shot by clean the lens/body contacts too. A problem here would
usually result in an Err-99 message but you never know.
Another long shot but try removing both the main battery and the little flat
battery (CR2016 3V). This would be a more complete way of resetting the
camera (in the absence of power to reset it via the menu).
    Bah!

  7. That was checked in the shop - they seemed happy that the contacts were
    fine.
It may have had a knock as it's been in my bag and been dragged to work
and back. No issue with moisture.
    I'll try that.
I think I'm going to buy a brand new battery and charge it and see what
that does. Thanks for the extra tip though.

The really irksome thing is that there was an one off event yesterday
that I wanted to photograph and I couldn't and there won't be another
    opportunity.
I have now tracked it down. Only issue is that I bought the thing in
Haywards Heath so if it needs to go back via the shop I purchased it in
I face on trip on sweller's wonderful bit of railway.

Come on your bike, beautiful backroads alongside the A22 then the B2028.

If you do come by train (xx.17 or xx.47 ex-Vic) avoid the first class on
the new stock as the whining inverters will drive you mad.

Mine plugs into a 12V fag lighter socket & gives 240V out t'other end.
Which is probably nothing like what train inverters do.

Converts the DC traction voltage to AC (from 750v DC to 415v AC then down
to 240v AC - the control systems run 110v DC - IIRC). The lighting
(IIRC) inverters are housed in the roof above the first class and they
    whine.

    They drive people mad.

  12. Had terminal snags on mine; luckilly it had two months warranty to go
    - big works were necessary, lots of the guts had to be replaced.
Neither could I ... my local emporium of all things expensive were
able to track the sale through a stock system label on the box.

Bit of an odd question as yours seems to be fucked, but how do you rate that
    camera overall?

I have been toying with the idea of getting one and the reveiws seem to be
favourable, but how have your "real world" experiances been of it?

Have you got any photos online?

    cheers,

I like it very much. For me it's a real camera - I don't like these
silly little things that are the size of your fingernail. I can't use
them as I have big fingers and the switches and controls are horrible. I
learnt to take pictures on a friend's basic SLR and then I had a Pentax
P30 which is a very simple thing really. I never had a fully fledged
film SLR so the EOS is a big step up in functionality.
A lot of my shots are of transport vehicles so I need a camera that can
deal with moving objects and I like to have full manual control of a
camera as I find Auto functions can, at times, get things horribly
wrong. I find the EOS very easy to use for my limited capabilities and
I have had some very good shots and plenty of average ones. There is
plenty more for me to learn about photography and from everything I have
read the EOS will still be a very good tool for that task. I enjoy
looking back at the pictures I have taken and for me that's a good
    enough recommendation.
    Nope.

Be aware Canon have replaced it (or will soon) with the 350D.

The 350D is approx £200 more than the current best deals on the 300D - so
    get one quick :)

Not half as stunning as the cab fans.

They are incredibly noisy, most of us shut them down through MITRAC (the
computer controlling the traction packages, on-train equipment etc.)

Problem is the relays on the cab air con weren't designed with the amount
of use in mind so the relays fail making the fans unstoppable.

The latest mod is a small plate on the MCB to stop drivers knocking it
out in effort to hear themselves think - incidentally stops it tripping
    too.

The catalogue of stupidity doesn't end there: Light grey carpets in a
train? Well, they're not light grey anymore....
