can I buy a moped before I get my provisional licence?

Either this has changed in the past few years or you're talking
bollocks. I had a bike delivered by a main dealer before I had passed
my test, and so it wasn't insured.

That said, if you're in Ireland as your posting address suggests,
    maybe it's different there?

Is that not to do with taxing it, though?

  3. The latter. I've *never* been asked by a dealer for insurance details.
I once had to tick a box that indicated I had a valid insurance but I
didn't get asked for any details.

    yes. I. Know.

It is, however, possible to lie, which is the jist of this sub-thread.

hmm - this raises a question I don't know the answer to. You can't tax
a bike unless it's insured (and if necessary MOTed). But I maintain, I
100% definitely had my SZR660 delivered before it was insured, and
before I had a full licence. I can't remember what happened re: its
    tax.

However, it's could be a moot point in this case, as the OP is looking
    at 2nd hand.

If it was brand spankin', taxing it is part of the registration - so
proof of insurance would have been required. Mebbe the dealer taxed it on
theirs, and it's this that's been cracked down on?
    Indeed.

That is utter bollocks. The kind of festering bile that makes usenet
    interesting.

I'm a registered motor-trader, and there is absolutely **** all that
says I have to check whether a buyer has insurance before I can sell
them a vehicle. If someone buys a vehicle they buy it, pay for it, and I
send off the logbook. That's it. No checking insurance policies, no
witholding the vehicle. You buy, you pay, you take away.

There's **** all chance that I'm going to piss about waiting for private
punters to arrange insurance documents on every bloody thing I sell. I'm
not going to hold on to the vehicle while you wait for your bloody cover
note - especially if there are other buyers waiting.

Traders / Dealers /do/ have to inform DVLA of the new owner of a
vehicle, but whether or not you've got insurance is of absolutely ****
all relevance whatsoever - *unless* you're buying it on finance, in
which case the finance company *might* want to see fully comp cover -
that's got bugger all to do with the DVLA though.

As a general Usenet rule anybody who begins a reply "Wrong again!"
    will be talking utter bollocks.

    insurance.

I had to produce it for insurance several times during the 13 years of
riding before that accident. I haven't had to since.

You had insurance before you could walk[1]?

How very far-sighted of your parents, you must have really racked up
some NCB by the time you got your first bike.

    [1] OK, the first time.
