Unless you wreck it in heavy snow.

I abandoned a tent at this years Elefant after a couple of poles ended
up being bent by the weight of snow that fell on it. I'd have been ok
if I'd bothered to clear an area around it where the snow could slide
off to when I banged the inside of the tent but the urge to drink beer
    was too great.

  2. Ha! Yes - the day I was supposed to get up and ride the 400 Four back
to England went...wrong in that respect.

    Where did I say that?

We've got plenty of tents but I took one that I didn't mind
destroying. You can buy a tent for less than the price of one night in
a small hotel so who cares if it doesn't make it home?

The ancient £30 "festival and low level summer use" tent survived its third
Elefant without problem. It seems to be indestructible, and the fibreglass
poles seem immune to sub-zero temperatures.

Premiere Classe has the advantage that the are usually paired with a
Campanile (which has a restaurant that's open every night of the week)
and you get 10% off in the restaurant.

  11. I dunno. I've had ukrm-ers I haven't met irl ask for crash space. And
    I've bummed similar off others.

The Logis de Ukrm network is a bit like the Underground Railway, IMHO.

    Post corrected.
    Brenner is rather expensive IIRC.

It's getting more difficult as the Swiss are monitoring Ebay. My auction
was cancelled. I sold it via the UKGSER forum (where I had bought it for
    £15)
Many Austrian passes are. The Timmelsjoch, which is an alternative to the
Brenner is 13 Euro for a bike & 17 for a car. It makes sense to get tot he
Austrian border with an empty tank and fill up before you leave the other
side as you can offset the tolls by using their cheaper petrol.

I never got around to selling mine, but in comparison to the fines
everyone else ended up paying in the land of nazi gold, I don't think
I did too badly getting stung thirty quid of so for a few hours on the
    road.

I think the essential difference is that in the UK there's a
reasonable prospect of a bit of quid pro quo. Ace and Jude, simply by
virtue of their location, already suffer a lot more quid than quo.
    Ditto, I suppose, the second-homers.

Interesting - I bought several of them last year on ebay, no issues
whatsoever. And I think the auctions I was watching were running to
    the end...
    Cheaper petrol is very true...

Another way to Italy through Austria would be Munich - Innsbruck -
Landeck and then go over the Reschenpass. That's definitely a non-toll
road and you can detour via the Stelvio while you're in the area.

they were readily available up until the end of summer on Ebay - after that
loads of auctions disappeared without trace a few hours after being put up,
mine included. You can do it if you set a realistic BIN and it goes before
    the complaint is registered.

There's one on there now, a few days to run 180469355616 - already up to
nearly 40CHF. Interesting to see if it disappears before completion.
done that, ended up in Livigno as said up there, where petrol was 98c a
litre! Got stung for 7 euros to go through the tunnel back into CH though.
As ever, the CH police were checking all bikes emerging from the tunnel for
noisy exhausts. As ever, the GS just gets waved through.

But we're lonely expats who thrive on any contact with 'home', right?

In point of fact we usually end up ahead of the game anyway,
particularly with the Bonwicks, who seemed to leave every last
cupboard full of beer the last time they crashed at our place in
    Engelberg.
