Tent? Wimp! Sleeping bag, bivvy bag, bottle of whiskey to knock you out at night, bottle of water to re-hydrate in the morning. Eat in pubs. -- Dave Remove my gerbil for email replies. Bike's are bosh, PC's are pointless, and the 1990's are nuts! Bikes are great, PCs are super, and the 1990s are the time to be! Save the apostrophe! Get 'em right! If in doubt, leave 'em out!!
I take the table and chair when going in a car with non-biking mates - one of whom had to be persuaded not to take a chiminea this year. I can take all of the rest on a bike, mind. Actually, I take a chair, as well. One of the Thermarest ones.
For Ben! If you decide to do this and want to buy one, I copped someone picking one up in the big Asda/Walmart in Minworth last week. Bound to be cheaper than a lot of other places, if you can put up with how busy it is. HTH
I take your point, but it's handy for drying teatowels. And yes, I know you can throw them over the tent, but string doesn't take up much room. I've never washed clothes when camping.
No-one's mentioned that if you're going on a bike, pack light and get as many uses out of each item as possible. Apart from .... Tent (with small mallet for if it's rock-hard ground) Sleeping-bag Sleeping-mat Pillow (Sleeping-bag bag suffed with clothes) Clothes. Go for layers, rather than bulk (2 long-sleeved t-shirts will keep you warmer than 1 jumper, and you can rotate the layers to keep fresher longer). Pack what you need, unpack, and pack half of that - in a bin liner. Light waterproof, good quality walking boots & socks. These are (arguably) the essentials ... Water bottle (1 x 2l and 1 x 500ml is good) Trangia (www.trangia.se - Expensive, but you can get cheaper copies from Millets) & fuel (for if you're cooking on site). Good waterproof torch 35mm film cases filled with shampoo, conditioner, washing up liquid, washing powder etc. 35mm film cases filled with cofee, powdered milk, sugar etc. And a packet of noodles. It won't last all week, but it'll get you a brew on and some food from a single kettle of water when you've pitched your tent in the middle of the night - bliss. 10m string & a few pegs. Plate, bowl (use Trangia stuff from up there ^^^), mug, knife, fork, spoon. Good all-round knife (small chef's knife will do) Good Swiss-army knife A few carrier bags for rubbish. Anything else you take should be defined as "luxury items".
Ta. I was going to get one of the small gas jobs, or maybe even a diddy methane one because that'll be more portable if I'm cycle camping in the future.
The 'bike' in this instance will be the car because I'm taking the mtb to do some riding while I'm up there. Fort William World Cup Downhill course, here I come
Ha, given the weather forecast I may very well need to hang stuff up to dry in the breaks between downpours.
Camping? In Scotland? *SHUDDER*[/QUOTE] Heh, I was racing in the rain in Wales last weekend That's fine for evening meals and lunch but I was thinking breakfast.
Getting them at lunchtime. I've got a good battery heavy duty torch. Urgh, no. Proper food and a cool box I think. I'm not going to be travelling around and carrying stuff so I don't need to travel light. No question. Got an air bed. Got companions. Don't really want them to be willing. Indeed.
Got one from my brother, and we're going up the M6 and on past Glasgow to Fort William so a detour to yours would be a bit of a trek.
