no, I agree, as per my post to Blaney - somewhere closer is what I have
    in mind.
I wasn't thinking of a general free for all - by invitation only.

My objection to it is really that (from here) Thailand is too far away
    - it's certainly outside "popping over for a long weekend" range. I'm
    thinking somewhere in former Yugoslavia.
well, TBH, the truth is "Angie has finally decided, and I've worked out
I can afford it". Looked at a townhouse in a very nice road on
Saturday, but decided it wasn't worth the 20% loading over a similar
property 2 minutes walk away, just because of the location (though it's
a road I'd *really* like to live in).

Oh, our road isn't "pikey", but it's just that one side is residential,
and on the other there are a row of shops, including a very popular
    chippie.
I've had a parking ticket despite having shelled out a ton for a
    residents parking permit[1]

[1] you're still not allowed to park on certain bits of the road at
    certain times of the day.

Obviously any residence which doesn't have parking for at least 2 cars
and several motorbikes is a bit pikey (1)
Yeah this was the same. Residents permits (paid for). Sometimes you
couldn't get parked within the area, Q penalty tickets. PC World opening
on the Botley Road helped a lot!

    (1) Which now condemns me, 2 bikes easily but only one car. Fortunately
Bytel has 8 spare for the rolling scrap collection.

I stopped off in Dubrovnik for a day from a cruise. It was lovely and
the Croatians seemed extremely friendly. The coastline is fantastic,
    clear blue sea and clean.
What really surprised me was everyone speaking perfect English.
Apparently Marshal Tito made it a requirement in schools.

When we were looking for The Chateau some years ago, we went to look at
one house, and it was like that - nowhere to park, wardens everywhere,
etc. So we stopped outside the house, and The Doctor sat in the car
while I popped out, rang the doorbell, and said: "Hello, we've got an
appointment to view the house, but we've decided we're not interested.
    Sorry. Bye."

    And we drove off.

One has to maintain certain standards in life after all, anyway what
possibly use would property without *substantial* parking be to Family
    Tog.
I bought the 7 Series several weeks before we moved to the Des Res.
After a couple of days half on the pavement surrounded by SOC and kids
playing football it was berthed in O2 Long Term and the 996 came back
    out.

Yes, it's Croatia I was thinking of, maybe somewhere near Split (I was
here in '86 - seemed nice then ;-)
    that's handy.
heh - "don't mention the war" in general, I think.

well, on that criteria, yes - the current place will take one small car
    or 5-6 bikes.

The place I looked at at the weekend[0] would take 3 bikes[1] and two
    cars.

[0] just spoke to the agent, who reckons the vendor will take 30K less
    than the asking price.
[1] it's a townhouse with a drive, but the current owner has converted
the garage in a 33:67 split into a "micro-garage" and an office. The
bit neareast the garage door is about 3.5 meters long, so could easily
fit 3 bikes in lengthwise, leaving the driveway for the car(s[2])
[2] now also "decided" to keep the Jeep and buy and older 911 or some
    such.

    A "gentlemans residence"
Sounds like a bike garage and proper workshop to me
I have a nearly new 911 up for grabs this week. Much nicer.

I like the town house concept quite a lot. I refuse to pay the £350k
asked for same 4 bed in Holywood though.

    oh, undoubtably, but

    a) I don't want to tie a lot of cash up in a car &
    b) I quite fancy an obnoxious whale-tailed stock trader-mobile, in
    guards red.
HFS - that's not much less than what you'd pay for a 4 bed townhouse in
North London - how the **** to people on NI salaries afford it?

A friend has a place in Bangkok [1] and a 'country residence' in Chang
Mai [2]. Very cheap for what you get, and the Chang Mai place has it's
own poppy field. Must visit at some point.

hahahaha. Seriously though, first-time buying in NI appears to be
nigh-on inaffordable unless you're some kind of hood.

    I have this hankering too
Property here in places is like deepest Englandshire. "Proceeds of
crime?" Considering 60% of the economy is public sector I don't know
how else. IR should just go in and do a forensic audit of every sod who
has bought a £400k+ house here in the past 6 years, particularly the
border counties. On the "forfeit unless you can prove how" rules UK Gov
could probably pay off the national debt.
