Why is it advantageous to have a blackened tape for the editing stage?

i've carried cameras (video and digital still) in a magnetic tank bag
without any problems. plus pocket pc, video/audio tapes, solid state
mp3 player, lcd tv, and a few other things you're not supposed to put
    anywhere near magnets.

Peter, blacking a tape is lot like making love to a beautiful woman....

It is a part of a simple set of established rules and procedures which,
if followed, guarantee a successful climax every time.

If you have previously blacked (not blackened) a tape then it has upon
it a continuos set of background information, which is important to the
    camera/player/editor.

Apart from making life easier for your machinery, it is supposed to make
your job of logging and retrieving the actual picture data for editing a
lot smoother and a bit quicker. And given that this is potentially the
most mind bogglingly boring and time consuming of all the tasks involved
in making your home videos it pays to do it.

In addition there is a whole load of folklore back from 60 years ago
about the desirability of running a tape through once before you
actually use it. Stuff like even tightness on the spool and effects on
wow flutter and shite. Bollocks mostly with today's technology but if
you are doing it anyway every little helps.

If anything ever provided proof that you a man without luuuurve, than
that's this little paragraph. Dude, you need to get laid, seriously.

No it isn't, as far as I can see,

Well, I tend to disect my tapes into little clips based on time-code
information. Which, do not depend on previously recorded rubbish as
far as I can see. But am happy to be further enlightened by you ad
long as it doesn't involve more sexual euphemism, or even direct
    references.

Well, not many will remember that far back, will they?

    The emphasis is on little?

You are out of luck if you want further enlightenment from me as I have
never played with anything other than previous blacked tape so I have no
idea what to expect. Which is why I said "supposed to make things
    easier."

They don't have to, the memories are brought forward with each new
generation. In just about every aspect of human endeavour you care to
name there are 'things that have always been done that way' sometimes
100 years on it is still relevant sometimes it is:
Absolutely. Synergy innit? The more I practice the luckier I get and
    all that old shite.

He shouldn't be going anywhere. If he didn't come to France with us he
should be sitting at home twiddling his thumbs or thumbing through the
    underwear section of catalogues.

It lays down a continuous time-code across the entire tape. Without this, if
you take the tape out of the camera and put it back in again (rather than
just stopping and starting the recording), you get a break in the time-code.
This makes non-linear editing more difficult because the editing software
can only reposition to a time-code within a single contiguous segment.
Capturing from camera-to-disk will also stop at a break in the time-code and
you have to restart it for the next segment.

Somewhere, either in the documentation for Premier, Pinnacle Studio or my
camera manual recommends the procedure for precisely this reason. And
certainly, when I've not done it, it's caused problems with non-linear
    editing later on.
