does anyone make camera mounts for petrol tanks that are held on with
magnets or are they all suckers? if not, how secure are the suckers,
and how long do they suck for?

Cable ties, Gaffa tape, luggage straps ... all suck bigger and longer
    than suckers or magnets.

Adapt a tankbag. That way you get some weather proofing and it is not
obvious that you have recorded incriminating evidence should you get tugged
    by plod.

Get one that screws into the petrol filler cap surround or get a bullet
camera that plugs into your camera and Velcro the bullet camera where you
want while keeping the video camera safe and sound in a rucsac or tank bag.

I had my camera at the bottom of the tankbag [1], although in an
additional camera bag, and the tapes never showed any problems.
When the bag is on the tank the magnets tend to be flapped out
anyway, thus further away from the camera. But even carrying it
around, with the magnets folded in was fine.

    Not far.

Besides it is not really static magnetic fields what do the damage,
much. It is the strongly varying ones you have to look out for.

There is a lot of bollox talked about this. /Reasonable care/ is all
    you have to worry about.

The only thing to add is to remind you to use a freshly blacked tape for
each outing but you do this of course anyway.

"Tape blacking is completely prerecording a tape with black.... with the
lens cap on, for instance. Blacking is mainly used to maintain timecode
throughout the tape. I don't recommend blacking miniDV tapes, particularly
consumer grade, because blacking is recording and puts wear on the tape and
the camera/vtr you use to black the tape."

Well not strictly true but materials technology has moved along a long,
long way since the proposers of this theory first made it up. I mean,
apart from the fact that the recording technology is no longer analogue,
it is irrelevant within the context of an occasionally used consumer
handicam but dead handy later for editing porpoises.
