Camchains and stuff

Having decided to keep the old CBR for a bit I've decided to do something
about the rattling cam chain, so popping down to the local Honda emporium
to enquire about how many limbs/first borns they want for the bits I
found that you can only get endless cam chains for the CBR1000s. The
mechanic there suggested that I split the endless chain, feed it though
and re-join it, sounds a bit dodgy to me?

    So the choices are

    1) Engine out and complete strip down, to replace endless cam chain
    2) Split cam chain and rejoin
    3) Just bung in a new tensioner and hope for the best
    4) Buy better earplugs

What are the views of the FOAK on all this?

I'm surprised you can't buy one split, have you tried M&P?

Having said that I replaced the cam chains on a VT250 many years ago
by splitting and rejoining without problems. The motion pro chain
tool will assist in doing this (I would get a spare pin for the tool
in advance as its not that difficult to break one), but not really
necessary if you can get a split chain. In any case the pins/side
plates are basically an interference fit and probably wouldn't come
off even if you forgot to rivet them.

BTW if the cam chain is duplex as opposed to roller chain be careful
when you attempt to fit the new link/re-rivet as its easy to push the
side plates on too far resulting is a very tight link which is tricky
    to free up.

Have a practice first on a bit of old cam chain if your going to
split and rejoin especially if its duplex chain.

The sales droid at M&P didn't know if the camchain was endless or not.
    Their description just said 'camchain'.
I think I might give it a go, be a good excuse to buy some more tool porn
as I've not got a chain splitter. I mean what can go wrong...
Its a duplex type jobbie, which is what worried me about splitting it.
Anybody got a bit of old camchain they don't want?
    It does indeed, ta.

He'll be talking about the Honda camchain then? Galea Services do
replacement camchains either split or endless for lots and lots of
    bikes, as does M&P.
Buy a split one and fit it yourself.

  5. I've used a soft link as a replacement, and split the camchain, erm....
three or four times. No worries.

It gets a bit complicated with a hy-vo camchain, mind.

Do it with the engine in, take cams out then just break the old chain
and link the enw one to it and feed the new one round by turning the
crank round. Rivet it up and then refit and retime the cams. Job's a
    good 'un.

You can buy a set length of the camchain required from any DID supplier
who has an account with Bickers, the DID importers. Bickers will cut it
off the roll for you and supply a soft link to suit.

The type of chain you need is :

    SCAO412ASDH 150 link, Bickers part number: 3114013

You'll also need the soft link, Bickers part number: 3114050

DID recommend the use of a rivetting tool, but you can get away with
doing it with a ball-pein hammer and a solid block on the other side of
the chain link if you are careful. I've supplied hundreds of cut-to-
length camchains when I was a Bickers rep, and none gave any problems.
It may be worthwhile replacing any tensioner blades at the same time,
for much the same reasons as sprockets get changed with drive chains.

Galea are in Southend somewhere now. Not in the old North London

Make sure to call the London number - a swift google throws up
shitloads of links to firms of the same name in Malta, of all places.
You wouldn't want to get unexspictedly spicked, now would you.

Galea is as common a surname in Malta as Hawkins or King might be over

  13. I can see them now, Maltese versions of Swiss Tony, with gold-plated
Honda camchains looped round their necks.
