<fx> waits for it </fx> but what is that rear plastic loop for? often seen
the back of the 1150GS, F650, Grand Canyon & Freewind.

    Know the bit I mean?

    You're thick.
Some nonsense required by certain markets to stop "spray" i imagine, must
    have mudguard fitted etc etc

    Take the bugger orf.

Yes, legal requirement in Germany where most of the bikes of that ilk are
sold. Many people remove it. Not an MOT requirement in the UK IIRC. I've
left it on mine as it is not a hindrance [1][2] and I won't have to search
in the back of the garage should I ever sell the bike.

[1] rear wheel can be removed with it in situ
[2] handy for GB & UKRM glitterball stickers too

  5. Someone once told me it was something to do with complience with the German
equivalent of the construction and use regs - summat to do with the distance
between the rear wheel and the mudguard.

As a device for preventing muck being flung up, it is a complete failure,
but it is quite handy on the 1150GS for putting a GB sticker on!

TuV[1] is the term you're looking for, I believe.

[1] With an umlaut, for the purists.

If they do so in Germany they're no longer legal. Even if it's
replaced the new part will also have to conform to TuV approval.
