Depends upon whether or not you want to use the bike for the
purposes intended, or just want to sit at home and polish it
or maybe pose at the local "biker" night down the pub.

If you'd just paid nearly 20K on some of the best engine and
suspension components, surely the track is the only place for it?

Besides, the 999R is such a different beast to any "track hack"
that you can find, the riding differences between the two are
    probably not transferrable.

It's quite tricky on the Guzzi.

  4. Does the guzzi actually have pegs?

Just pointing out that riding a "track hack" of some
    description (eg, Gixxer/CBR/other IL4) and riding a
big v-twin are two completely different kettles of
    fish.

I ride on the track to improve my riding ability and
confidence on the bike. Seems like having a separate
bike for road and track is a bit of a waste.

    PS: ****.

  6. ooh, ooh - he's on the hook.
    quick, find the net.

I think you missed out the bit where you admit to riding a Duke on the
track to show off just a teensy weensy bit.
well dwb's targeting is certainly getting better these days.

If you have a bez around on a track bike that isn't hideously expensive
should you bin it and apply the confidence and skills to your expensive road
bike then you have the best of two worlds.

But surely that only applies if the bikes are similar?

Anyway, in this instance the 999R *is* David's track
bike - he's got a MultiPasta for the road.

I'm not sure if I've missed something here - but what else would it have?

Mine has Tarozzi rearsets which are a bit high up and the sidestand
grounds out first and I've never managed to touch them down on the other
    side.

I dangle the toes of my boots over the edge, perhaps unconsciously, to
feel the floor coming up as the pegs don't fold up. I've ground my boots
a number of times but I think we're in running out of tyre territory
before the pegs are in any position to cause the bike to lever up.

    Unlike an MZ.

All bikes operate under the same principles with regard to general
techniques. The closer the track bike is to the road bike the easier the
transferance of practical application I suppose. It might brake differently
and the riding position may not be exactly the same but it'll still work.

Don't be daft. It's plainly obvious that every different bike you buy
needs complete retraining, just like a commercial pilot has to be
certified for every new plane he flies. How could you possibly expect
to get off, say, a ZRX1200 and ride something like a gixxer thou
without first having attended a classroom training session, then a
half-day on closed roads and a half day on the track before being
allowed to ride on public roads?

It would be impossible. You'd have to be some kind of flame-haired [1]
    riding god.

I'd never contemplate such a thing. Nor would I be seriously tempted to
buy a gixxer thou next year.

Whether you're taking the michael or not. I do find that there is a seed
of truth to this. I used to find it took me two or three days to 'tune'
into the gixer or the BMW if I'd been riding the other for any significant
length of time. It was the subtle differences which I needed to re-aquaint
myself with so that I could push hard on the bike in question.

Not forgetting riding techniques, and that a track environment is a very
different place to the road. Road techniques used on the track will make
you slow. Track techniques used on the road will most likely result in a
    visit to A&E.

  20. It was a mildly disparraggeing (however one spells it) comment about
the guzzi, which would have be more justified at someone of lesser
    mechanical ability.
