  4. When we were young, we had a gang of toughs who wore pink tee shirts.
If anybody said *anything* .... ;-) We also rode girls bicycles, but
that was because we needed the room.

Larry - thanks for reminding me that I need a Versace jacket.

Hey, on another note: I have a tattoo in mind for my clavicle.
The new piece of Titanium looks like this (well, messier in my
case, since I still have some meat around the bone):

    http://www.camber-thrust.net/shoulder/clavicle_o2_large.jpg

and I was thinking of inking this near the incision:

  5. Mercy Michael...them Docs need help in metal fabrication... that piece needs to
be formed around the bone a little more... no wonder it protrudes for a
    tattoo...

  6. 8^) I meant -compared- to $3.00 gas.
Wow, I think that's really crazy! Of course any MC death could
qualify for a Darwin Award, but burning to death is probably the least
    pleasant way.

  7. Big improvement over the stainless steel variety, which sometimes
fails before the bone has formed a good union. There's a catalog of
different shapes, actually, and usually the doc has a bunch on hand,
selects one, autoclaves it, and inserts it.

The trick with the clavicle is that there is not a lot of vascularity
in the area, and so you want to minimize soft tissue disruption. I'm
pretty lucky, it was a badly communited fracture last May (read: shattered),
and the could not have interevened surgically at the time. Just my
bad luck that it resolved into two pieces instead of one.

There's no protrusion at the skin level, just a fairly clean scar
(photos to follow, when I'm no longer bruised). I need someone
to come by and ride the bikes... ;-)

The tat would answer stupid questions at the security check point at the
    airport or courthouse. ;-)

  9. That's what I was thinking, yes. Though I don't know if it has sufficient
density, etc. I'll find out, I suppose. I also don't know if non-
ferromagnetic metals trigger the detectors as much as regular steel...
    Ti is weakly magnetic.

For all I know it's some Ti15V3Cr3Sn3Al alloy or somethin' ;-)

The SS screws in my ankle (turned over a farm tractor when I was
15 -- farms are far more dangerous than motorcycles!) have never
earned me any scrutiny at airport checkpoints, so we'll see about
    the shoulder.

  10. I think the cumulative amount of metal in my body might start setting
    them off, though :)

Anyway, don't try to talk me out of getting a tattoo! It would be
my first, and I think it's witty. On the opposite shoulder I am
thinking of getting this device, which I'm using on bikes and helmets
when I get the Scotchlite die cut:

I take it from the picture that you needed and open reduction /
internal fixation because you broke your pelvis? Ow. That's
not good. Glad you're walking. Is the stupid motherfucker in
    jail?

  11. Dunno. All I can tell you is that neither platinum jewelry nor titanium
eyeglasses seem to set off any alarms.

It's okay I guess...but even though it looks
"Okay" it could be better. I mean yes no one can
see it, but for gosh sake it should look like a
part of the bone! It should blend so smoothly that
it would look like a thickening of the bone and
not part of an erector set.
    I like it!

  17. The clavicle is problematic -- and the function of the
plate is just to hold the parts together until a bony
union forms. It's an option to get the thing removed,
but that involves a second surgery, and unless there are
loose screws floating about, I won't do it.

First X-rays available sometime in June -- I'll see if I can
get a copy posted. They're all digital these days.

Speaking of tank-slappers and highside maneuvers, here's
what it felt like when I came off:

  18. I broke my arm in 2001 (car accident) and got a metal bar in it. I
think it's SS. I always wondered if it would set off alarms in metal
    detectors.

I finally got to test it a year ago. I went through a metal detector
at an art museum (of all things!) I told the guy "I have a metal
plate in my arm." He said 'Yes, we can see that.'

  19. You're supposed to walk through the metal detector, not the x-ray
    machine.

  20. It was a regular metal detector! It seems to me it would be
indistinguishable from a long knife or maybe a bayonet concealed up my
sleeve. But apparently they were able to tell the difference.
