Cache/cookies question

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Sep 29, 2003.

  1. For the Mac-isti, I suppose.

As part of my "keeping an eye on things", I'm trying to open the MS
Explorer cache, but just get an error alert when I double-click it. Even
the error alert window is just blank.

    Any ideas?

Secondly, spyware: is it a good idea to delete all the cookies from time
to time? I don't want to feck up Ebay, SO's on-line banking, etc.

Locate the folder 'MS Internet Cache' and have a look in there - there
should be 3 .waf files in there.

If this is what's causing the error, then delete the folder - IE will
recreate it next time you launch it.
I delete all the cookies every couple of days. All you lose are the save
passwords etc. - I'm not worried about that, and it helps keep the
    system 'clean'.

The Older Gentleman was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Cookies shouldn't screw up your Internet banking or ebay - otherwise
the windoze crew would have problems after every semi-annual
reinstallfest. The only time these sites tend to use cookies is when
you're actually logging in, if at all.

Worst that can happen IME is that Amazon doesn't recognise you any
more unless you log in again...

You should be able to tell which cookies are for Ebay, IF etc. -
though I'm afraid I have no idea how they are stored on the Mac so
can't tell you where to look. Have you tried doing a search for
    ebay.co.uk on your computer?

  6. Oh, all the ebay and other decent cookies are well flagged. There's
    zillions I don't recognise, mind.

use safari. microsoft has withdrawn support for internet explorer on the
mac, so you might as well get used to the replacement.

microsoft says that it can't write standalone browsers, that they /have
to/ be integrated with the os in order to function properly. therefore they
have to make all their standalone browsers disappear before anyone notices.

odd that a standalone browser with no trick hooks into the os (and which
was originally ported from a completely different os) can compete with
microsoft's product so successfully that they feel they have to withdraw
    from the arena.
