Buying helmets online or otherwise?

    Folks.

I'm looking for recommendations for places to buy helmets.

I don't want to spend the average $700 I've seen at the
couple of online places I've had a look around.

Anyone got a story - horror or otherwise - about places to
avoid/patronise when it comes to buying a helmet?

I'm open to online purchase if they ship to Sydney, but
I'm also open to shopping around a bit in Sydney.

BTW, thanks to everyone who commented with suggestions
    and/or advice - I'm now the proud owner of a 1988 BMW
K100RS - well, I will be when I actually manage to get
it home later this week. :)

How can you buy a helmet online? I thought that perfect fit was essential
and even within the same range and size of helmets, they differ slightly.

I got my Arai helmet from Motor Cycle Accessories Supermarket in Wentworth
St, Sydney. But they were not flexbile on the price.

How much you spend is going to depend on the brand, and colour....

Expect to pay a premium for fancy paintjobs, if you are looking at solid
colour lids then the more expensive, then generally the better quality
fittings. Cheap ones (under $300) tend to fray and packdown more quicky
    than expensive ones.

    www.maw.com.au should have cheaper lids.

They are in Castle Hill, any of the Motor Cycle Accessory shops -
Paramatta or Sydney - should have a wide range too. I wasn't that
impresed with Helmet Warehouse at Yagoona but that's cos I'm an openface
type and their range of those was pitiful.

If you haven't bought one for a while, then spend a day trying them on -
all types, dirt and road, full and open. In all price ranges.

Work on feeling the difference, find what brand fits best, and gives
you the best vision. Make sure you are wearing your usual jacket, and
test in something approximating your usual riding position. This is so
you can see if the lid fouls your jacket shoulders when you headcheck,
    or your collar.

Once you have determined the right brand, you then get to determine
the model. Don't worry too much about noise, that depends so much on
the interaction between head position and fairing and airstream that
you can't tell till you ride with it. Worry about vision and comfort.

I have a Shoei shaped head, and find that the Korean cheapies THH fit
me as well as the Shoeis do at half the price. I have to replace them
every couple of years as the padding packs down and the straps fray
and they generally get rattier more quickly than the Shoeis I've had,
but at the price I don't mind.

The three most important things in selecting a new helmet.

    1. Fit

    2. Fit

    3. Fit

Unless you have a detachable head you can send away for a fitting, a
mail-order helmet is probably not a good idea.

Unless there are dealers handy where you can try them all, then buy the
one you want on-line, but you'd better be sure the sizing is consistent.
I suspect postage might eat up a lot of the savings.

My recommendation: buy the cheapest helmet that fits really well.

You might be able to get lucky and get last years model of the Arai's still
hanging around. See what you can find.

Not sure whether they're still around, but last time I visited Peter Stevens
(city) for their supposedly 10-80% off sale, I spotted some plain colour (I
think they were titanium gray) Shoei X-SP (not version 2) for sale at the
price of $450. These were top of the line for Shoei at one stage and they
still retail for +900. Of course being +4 years old might be a problem.

    Thank you, Obi Wan. :)
Sure. I ripped it off from someone else {after asking, of course!} who
ripped it off from /., I think. :)

So I've noticed - fancy colour schemes are mega expensive.
Yeah - seems about the best I can do there is $289. Least they go up
to my size, unlike most other places. :)
Yeah, that was about what I was planning to do.
Hmmm, fair enough. Didn't consider that. Thanks for the tip. :)

The point is taken - shopping on the web is out, unless I find a style that
fits really as a shop, and don't like the price - I can search for that
model and size on the web and see if I can do better.

When that command is entered on the correct operating system, with the
correct utilities installed, it outputs the following

    RTFM

Or, for the non-technical support people, Read The Fine Manual.

Something I, as a technical support person, wished people did more
often before complaining "It don't work".

    :)
