They've been doing something similar round Canterbury, actually.

No speed sign, just PCSOs and enraged yokels wielding a hairdryer around in
equal measures and noting down reg numbers of vehicles deemed to be speeding
before passing the details to plod.

I suppose I'd rather that, than yet more scamera vans being rolled out.

Got a good number of knobs doing self same thing in my village.
The Parish council, although pleading poverty, managed to shell out upward
of 200 sovs and even bought the village woodentops their own hairdryer.
One problem is though, they keep standing right out the front of my house
and "hairdryer" on a regular basis. I've had my car bombarded by the
infamous egg-throwers on quite a few occasions now as they seem to think I'm
    the one standing there.
Pisses me off, and the woodentops get upset when I tell them to "move
    along!"

Waste of time methinks, and just seems to anger people unnecessarily.

"Oh, he's easy enough to recognise. His left thumb and forefinger form a
circle and he moves his hand up and down in a rhythmic manner. No, no, I
don't know anything else, it all happened so *fast*...".

Amazing. How thoughtful of them to provide copies of the letters in
editable/printable form. Unfortunately, this would seem to play into the
hands of pranksters, who might target local dignitaries - magistrates, chief
constables, county councillors etc - and cause needless distress to them.

    Just a generalised "You *fiend*!".

    Is there a problem?

No, no, not at all. I think I may have misinterpreted your remark as being
some sort of accusation. Obviously, I can't imagine what you might be
    accusing me of.

    Accusation?

    Sir, you misunderstand me grievously.

"Admiration" is the word you are in search of.

But then, you knew that; you Evil Overlord, you.

What really made me laugh was the "this is the final written warning you
    will receive!" bit.

It reminded me of the POW camp commandant's briefing I read about years
    ago:

"Anyvun eskapink will be *SHOT*! Anyvun escapink ein second time vill
    be..."

<remainder of speech inaudible due to derisive laughter>

What interested me is how they might stand under the data protection
act both in recording and passing on said information.

What really strikes me about all these places is that they are all
*so* perfect in every other respect that these people have no other
issues to worry about, nothing at all, they must have solved every
other problem ever identified, these places are clearly heaven on
    earth. I'll move there now.

I think the youngest will be back that way to see friends on a couple
of occasions next year. I shall issue instructions.
