Bummer

  1. I got hit from behind by a BSM driving instructor this morning whilst riding
in to work. We exchanged details after a few heated words (apparently it was
my fault for breaking). It wasn't until I got to work that I looked at the
piece of paper the bloke had given me - details on one side and on the other
were printed the words "your BSM driving instructor called" - made me
chuckle. Luckily no damage as far as I can tell.

  2. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Grimley_Feindish amazed us all with this pearl of
    wisdom:
I've seen more acts of stupidity from lone BSM drivers (presumably the
instructor) than any other. They stand out because they're supposed to
    be driving instructors FFS!

You braked and it was your fault? I'd like to see the insurances
    companies take on that.

I had that one tried on me 21 years ago, I braked and 'robbed the third
    party of his braking distance'!!!!

    They lost.

Oh ffs, why do we have to claim for every little thing that happens to
us? I broke a bone in my foot a fortnight ago because of a paving slab
that wasn't completely flat, a few people have said 'put a claim
in'..ffs, I just should've picked my foot up higher.

    Jeez.

  9. Yeah, it was the intructor, he was a bit of a pompous twat as well. The
full story is he had pulled out on the roundabout that I was turning right
on, he came off of a bit of dual carridgeway to my left and was in the left
hand lane. When he entered the roundabout he changed lanes effectively
heading straight at me. I sounded my horn, he looked and carried on so I
braked and ended up behind him. Having seen it was a BSM at that point I
went past him and braked gently to pull him over (I'm fully aware of how
good the brakes are on my 10 so made a point of not stopping quickly). He
had other ideas and ended up riding my back wheel to the point that he made
    contact.

A police car happened to be coming down the road after I had stopped him so
I flagged it down as I was in serious danger of landing the instructor one
if someone didn't intervene. The copper was excellent, he even managed a
smile when I was muttering under my breath about the bloke being an
incompetent twat. He showed genuine concern for that fact that my bike might
have been damaged even though nothing obvious showed, stopped the traffic
for me to get away and put the bloke in his place from the start.

  10. I agree - there is no damage to my bike so I won't be claiming. I explained
this to the manager of the BMS office and he was happy to cover the cost of
the damage to their car on that basis. TBH I could do without the hassle of
filling out the forms and losing NCD whilst its going through anyway so this
was a bit of a result.

Having just read that, I am of the opinion that you may not have acted
in the best manner at all, although I may re-consider my opinion after
re-reading it tomorrow. As it currently stands, you are guilty of
deliberately causing the guy to hit you, AFAICS.

Watch yourself. I've had this sort of conversation in the past, then had
the **** come after me later through his insurance.

It didn't work, but it was a bit of hassle.

I'd let your insco know on a "for information only" basis anyway.

  13. Do **** off. He slowed to a halt, not slammed on.
Even if he did slam on, in true emergency stop stylee, BSM geezer should
still have had enough braking distance, or 'plan b' to not collide.

The reason for stopping isn't relevant.

Not strictly true. You can be leaving a lovely safe distance but if someone
motors passed you and in front of you and emergency brakes you could easily
hit them as the ideal stopping distance is suddenly not your decision
anymore. Not that this necessarily happened in this case but it could.

I'm undecided - Grimly admits that he "braked gently to pull him over". I
don't think any member of the public has the right to pull over another
    member of the public.
Certainly the driving instructor wouldn't have expected to be pulled over.
I'd imagine that anyone in the mind-set of wanting to pull-over another
road-user is probably suffering from the ever-so-familiar 'red mist' and
would most likely present a potential risk to any nearby road-users.
I'd like to give Grimly the benefit of the doubt but I know how it works -
how we get when we're riled by an ignorant or downright rude road-user.
Couple that with the skill to manouvre a bike quickly and accurately to
inconvenience our four-wheeled oppressor and ... "we've got ourselves a
situation... step outta the car please sir ... RESPECT MAH AUTHORI-TAY!!"

You're right, they don't - but unless Grimly blocked the whole road -
matey could and should have merely used 'plan b' and moved round the bike.

But if Grimly was genuinely trying to pull the guy over then surely he
wouldn't have given the guy many options? Before he attempted to pull him
over there had been no contact - so BSM bloke would not be expecting to pull
over and Grimly would probably have had to be doing something pretty
drastic/risky(?) to make his pulling-over intentions clear.

I think he should have just kicked the guy's mirror off and wheelied off
    into the sunset.
Naturally, that's what I'd have done.
