Only if you can convince the RTA that you have modified a 1976 bike, as
opposed to creating a new one by a whole new from scratch frame.
Doesn't matter a monkey's what he thinks. If the frame is a 1956 frame
modified then it's not a completely new frame is it ? So it comes under
the regs for a '56 then, hey ?

Don't forget that the regs aren't retrospective, so if you built a bike
from scratch in 1967 using a 1956 donor motor, then as far as the RTA is
concerned it's a '67 (or whatever number is in their database given how
sketchy their data is for older stuff)
An opinion being popular doesn't make it right.
It's not hard, the frame is the bike, build one fully from scratch and
it's an '06 - retain enough of an original frame to persuade an engineer
it's a modification and not a new frame and it's then a modified one of
    whatever year model it is.

Mod rules vary according to age.

  2. Wise council indeed.

Unfortunately I hear through the grapevine that our local guy is a dickhead
who fails everything unless its standard.

Thanks for that, that all makes sense.

Next question, how much of the frame has to remain to qualify as modified?
The one I built had the steering head, down tubes and engine cradle round to
about half way up the back of the motor. I replaced the top tube and put on
a rigid rear. Or maybe that's down to the individual engineer.

I don't plan to do this. Not at the moment anyhow, just curious to learn.

    cheers.

So go to him and say "I am looking at a modified bike. Can you tell
me what I need to know to get it registered? What I have to do?"

And see if what they say is true.

Probably. My Yam has the same cradle and oil-carrying backbone, and tank,
and the rear subframe is heavily modified to fit the monoshock. The
rest - forks, swingarm, seat, wheels, bars, brakes, lights - are off
    other bikes.

So the majority of the "frame" is Yamaha.

It's registered as a '76 Yam XT. Helps that the compliance plate is
in good condition and the engine number matches.

On rods in Qld you can claim a reproduction chassis as long as you have
the bit of the original with the serial , not much at all.

24 hours ago you had no idea at all of the process and today you know
the reputation of the 'local guy'...

It was my experience that they say things like "each case is different
and we can only judge each bike after we've seen it" and "no we don't
have written guidelines" and similar unhelpful things...

It can be tricky if they do that, but it is still worth a try.
