    Speaking for me:

    1) So my laptop can connect to nntp when it is attached to foreign
    networks.

    2) I am not a sysadmin/network bod and I learn stuff.

  2. So that you have all the articles locally - otherwise you get the
inevitable delay between articles in the newsreader.

Of course if you are using something like Agent this won't apply. But
for those of us using on-line newsreaders (I use slrn) having a local
spool is the only real way of doing things.
In which case (assuming they are using an offline reader of some sort)
you are right - the simplist solution is just to point that newsreader
    at the upstream server.

  4. I assume news.individual.net is the German Swerver that I hear lauded
    occaisionally around here ?

    Worth the 10euros ?

I guess the "free" ng access servers you see occaisionally spammed are
up and down like the proverbial fiddlers elbow.

    Yes, deffo.
Shouldn't it be up and down like a whore's drawers?

Fiddlers' elbows go in and out, surely?

I've had several 'moments' recently with Motzarella - very slow (server
overloaded), and saying that a posting failed whereas in fact it did not.

I took the advice and switched to news.individual.net and not had any
problems so far. It is definitely much quicker than Motzarella has ever
    been.

Which is the reason why I've used it before in the past. I had an issue
where connectivity with my ISP's NNTP Server was pretty ropey so to stop
my client locking up I used leafnode. Also handy for reading off-line
but then a lot of clients (you mentioned Agent) will allow you to
download both headers and message bodies for later reading.

  8. ISTR that Doc Gonz0 made one out of some incredibly ancient Windows box,
and hosted ukrm on it. Maybe 10 years ago.

He had a feed from some biggers news server that fed it ngs. It only
hosted new ngs if a subscriber actually subscribed to one. No binaries,
either. Worth a google on this ng, anyway.

  10. I seem to remember that he used leafnode for it - and your description
    certainly fits.

  11. Not to mention that it has several ports (80, 443, 563) across several
servers in addition to port 119...

Motzarella was inundated by ~1000 homeless aioe users last week and almost
crashed under the load. This has now been sorted out (thanks to prawn for
Well, Thunderbird and SSL, I assume? This problem has been fixed last
    week.

*waves* Bear in mind that I use you as an upstream server so my consumer
experience of your service is buffered by leafnode. I can extrapolate
how using a news client directly with your server /could/ seem like a
'poor' service. (I use poor in a very loose sense as I *know* that the
availability of and connectivity to your server is very good).

Your service has been rock solid for the past 24 hours which is a Good
    Thing!

It would do you no harm to set a remote monitoring service so you can
    gauge your customer experience.

    Keep up the good work.

    Ah, that explains it. Thanks.
    Yes - I assume you don't mean a Thunderbird fix - I haven't seen any
    updates?
