That's the rectifier foobarred then, swiftly followed by the battery.

The possibility of being stranded in Knutsford with no way of getting
the bike home was a bit of a worry. Although I am in the AA I
discovered today that I'm only paying the roadside cover, as I was over
10 miles away from home they couldn't transport me and the bike, and
nor would the AA agree to me upping the cover.

A lot of headscratching later, and the AA man decides to take me to a
bike shop in Manchester to purchase a new battery, but sadly no
rectifier so it was a case of taking the chance on getting home with
the new battery and the rectifier disconnected.

What a crap day it's turned out to be!

Roadside cover is only useful within 10 miles from home?
Just what exactly do you pay for?

    Breakdown Cover from just £40*

Roadside =3F Help more than =3F mile from your home. If your car can=3Ft be
fixed by the road, we=3Fll take you and your car home or to the nearest
garage (whichever is nearer at the time).

Where is the mistake? in your post or in the AA website?

Well, it looks like I am paying for just fucking roadside, doesn't it?
Or is that too fucking difficult for you?

I have no idea when it changed, I just kept renewing my cover every
year. As I've been transported on the back of an AA van from fucking
Yorkshire before now, I didn't realise the fucking cover had changed.

    Is that ok for you?

Sorry about that, it was a cut and paste from the AA website, it seems
it changes the text somewhat, when pasted.

I'm guessing, just guessing, that the bike shop in Manchester was
closer than home, therefore SP got took there. Just a guess, mind.

You have a point there, dear boy. The nice chap from the AA actually
took me there and back to buy a battery, charged in-situ on the bike
for a short while, disconnected the rectifier and *fingers crossed*
there would be enough charge to get me home.

And, really he didn't have to do that. He started by calling a mate of
his who is a Honda fanatic to verify the problem was what he thought it
was, [1] and what the rectifier looked like, as well as finding out the
nearest open bike shop to our location. He did a far lot more than I
expected given the restriction on my cover, and I really cannot give
the AA any grief over today, only praise.

Now I can't decide whether it's worth trawling Ebay for a 2nd-hand one
or paying the full monty for a new one, given that it appears (by
information gleaned after the event) that the CBR600 appears to have a
    weak spot in that department.

[1] When he attached all the gubbins to the bike battery and let his
big 'whatever-it-was-electrical-thing' run the bike, it put a charge of
c13A into the battery, run the bike on it's own with the rectifier
charging, it was between 17-18A. EEK. No wonder it was hot.

[snip trails of Reg/Rec and AA]
It's a Honda; they all do that si^Wmadam. When the VFR's
regulator/rectifier died, I replaced it with one from
    http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk.

Ooh ta, I was just going to go direct to the local emporium.

Is this a weakness that only appears in the CBR/VFR range? I've never
had a problem with any of my previous Honda's in that department. The
CBX was unusual with 3 changes of camchain tensioner under warranty
    though <G>
