Dealer's just called after whipping off the header pipes to replace
the blowing manifold gasket. Only it wasn't the gasket. There was
actually a crack (presumably vibration-induced) in one of the
stainless header pipes, behind the heat shield, where it couldn't be
seen. Cue one new set of pattern stainless headers.

Paging the metallurgists: is stainless steel any more given to
cracking than mild steel? Is it more brittle or summat?

Yes, more brittle. Don't get anything for nothing, see. It may not
corrode, but it still has built-in obsolescence.

Can it not be TIG welded then?

But it can be repaired easily enough.

I parsed that as TOG welded :)

Nah, fukkit, just stick some new ones on.

If a replacement pipe is difficult you could drill a hole [1] at the end of
the crack to stop it propagating then GAMI to do a quick stainless weld.
Get a proper stainless weld, a mild steel weld on stainless is going to
encourage more cracking. TIG is best.

[1] Easier said than done, stainless is tough stuff. Use a cobalt drill
and plenty of cooling or maybe a diamond tip on a dremel.

Bullshit. A decent sharp HSS drill bit will go through.

    It's only a fucking exhaust!

I think we need to call a committee meeting to discuss when to call a
committee meeting to discuss this further.

On stainless? Are you *quite* mad?
I'm not well. I had a pneumonia jab this morning
    and it's made me ill.

    Yes.

    I'm mad, me.
If you're ill, you shouldn't be at work.

    Yes mum.

Trouble is I'm only a bit ill and I can't be arsed to drive home.

Beer and curry this evening will cure me.

  15. Exactly. Takes a bit of re-sharpening mind, but it will work fine.
I recall I was getting a burner pot made up at my local metal basher
shop and it involved drilling some 200 holes in 2mm stainless. The lad's
face fell at the prospect, but I paid for it anyway.

You're likely to get a pedantic reply from a metallurgist pointing out that
there's hundreds of different grades of steel that are covered by the
frequently misused terms 'mild steel' and 'stainless steel'. Said range of
materials has a wide variety of properties that would make any affirmative
or negative reply to such a simple question equally likely to be a complete
    load of old bollocks.

Not that I would ever stoop so low.

Heh. Fucking nurse. She said "You've not had this, and we recommend it.
    It won't take a sec."

    "Oh, OK" says I.

    "Are you right or left-handed?"

Oh, riiiiight. It's going to hurt then.

In fairness, it's just left me feeling one degree under, and that's
    almost certainly psychosomatic.

I don't remember it having that effect on me, but I was given it after a
horrendous bout of bronchitis that was turning into pneumonia. So I was
    probably still several degrees under.
