Buffalo Gloves

Bought a pair of race style gloves branded buffalo last year. Bit of a
distress purchase as the pair I had left home in had been stolen and they
were only ones in the shop in XS size ( dinky hands). Cost £40 quid IIRC.
Lots of carbon fibre and double leather.

Imagine then my disappointment when I found the the palm just above the
thumb had worn through. Not from falling off, just from rubbing on the side
    of the throttle

My disapointment then went up a notch further as i was able to tear the
(remarkably thin) leather right acrosss the palm with a minimum of effort.
By minimum i mean "**** all"

What pushed the disappointment needle into the red was the discovery that
the carbon fibre knuckles could be snapped just by gently twisting the
gloves and some of the "double" leather was just two thin sheets overlapped
to give the appearence of double thickness.

I'm giving them a thumbs down and am grateful that I still retain my thumbs
    to do so.

My gloves are Buffalo but they were completely unscathed after my off
earlier this year (mind you I was only doing about 3mph at the time on
    100 yard-old tyres!).

Just given them a bit of tugging - they don't appear to be too ready to
    fall apart.

Mine stayed in one piece when I got punted, and I *know* my hands hit a
lot of stuff, 'cos I still ended up with cuts and bruises on my hands.

Don't think they make them like mine any more. They don't have any
armour, only a little padding over the back of the gloves.

<nips downstairs to check make of gloves, finds buffalo>

Well, I bought a set at roughly that price, with similar "features",
and as summer gloves they've been fine so far. I supposed I'd better
get looking for some new ones then.

I have a pair of Buffalo troosers, and have worn them almost daily for a
year now, no problem at all with these.
Ditto as well. However, these were the only pair I could find that I
    liked the fit of too.

Reading Flash's original posting and subsequent replies, their content
does not surprise me. Few motorcycle clothing manufacturers have any
form of quality control assessments in place. If the product supplied
by the offshore manufacturer is similar in appearance to the item
which appears in the distributor's brochure, that is often as far as
the checking goes. No representative sampling of materials or
constructions to verify that the product specification is being
    maintained.

I said "few motorcycle clothing manufacturers". There are one or two
who provide the exception to the rule. I am dealing with just such a
case at the moment. Samples of motorcycle clothing have been approved,
but in deconstructing a sample from an initial shipment, there is very
little which bears any resemblance to the stipulated product
    specification.

In this case it is a mendacious manufacturer who is trying to pull the
wool over the distributors' eyes, but on the other side of the coin
are European distributors who screw the last penny, cent, rupee or fen
out of the subcontractor, and then expect this price to be held
year-after-year against increases in materials and labour costs (which
also affect the developing nations). Something has to give in order
for the supplier to balance their books, and it is the quality of
materials, components and construction in the product.

Offshore suppliers can manufacture up to a standard or down to a
price. There is little of the former and plenty of the latter where
motorcycle clothing is concerned. If Flash, who we can assume is an
experienced motorcyclist - :) - has been caught out. What hope does
    an inexperienced consumer have?
