I have the battleax BT57 tyre on the front of the ZZR and its due for
replacement, but i have a maxxis on the back. Thinking back a few weeks ago
about the mixing of tyres and stuff, my questions are:

    1. since i have already got mixed tyres and i have seen how good the battlax
tyre is, how good is the BT57??

    2. is the BT12 any better than the 57?

    3. how good are the maxxis tyres on the front??

The BT57 is a touring tyre

    In order of grip (worst to best);
    BT57
    BT56
    BT010
    BT012
    BT56SS
    BT012SS

I would not purchase Maxxis tyres for front or rear

so it would be safe to assume that a good mid range tyre would be the 012??
or maybe the 010?? anyone else with a view??

After 2000km's on the MeZ4's I had fitted to the CBR just before xmas, they are the only tyre I'd recommend! Unless you
really need a sports compound, the MeZ4's are an almost ideal compromise between the performance and durability. I've
ridden straight highways and twisty backroads, in wet weather and dry, short trips and long, and cannot fault them in
any way. They grip well even when cold, and handle very well. They're wearing well so far, and promising a reasonably
long life, which is good. Basically, they are (IMO) one of the best tyres to get for a 600 if you want good performance
    and low wear. YMMV.

The BT010 and BT56 are not available any more.

I forgot about the BT020 which fits between the BT57 and BT010.

I would put a sports tyre on the front (say BT012) and either a sports
tye on the rear or a better touring tyre (say BT020) if your want more
    mileage.
I do not believe that going for a small money saving (by fitting a
touring tyre) on the front is worth the potential downside - losing
    the front.

  9. Burnie,
May not be available as aftermarket, but Suzuki still O.E.M.(BT56) fit the
2003 Hayabusa with it ,the same since new.
And the Honda Firestorm still scores 204's.
I would recommend the Battlax 020, as a good allround tyre, though all round
tyres are round, but I am sure some one here will say different.

Burnie might have confused you there, the BT012 is far from a mid range
tyre. It's pretty sports oriented, you only go up to the BT012SS from there
which is super sticky. On a 600cc machine you'll get about 7 or 8000km out
of a rear, on a litre bike you'd be lucky to get 6000 out of a rear on the
BT012's. Some people of course chew em even faster!

I am looking for something that is right in the middle of the range.
something that will give me milage and something that will give me decent
wear, still havent made my mind up just yet. although i will say that the
maxxis that i have on the back seems to be quite good, that is it hasn`t let
    go and isnt wearing abnormally

BTW, Dave, before you get too worked up about all the fancy tyres folk
round here are recommending, it's a good idea to ask at a bike tyre
place what is actually available in the sizes you want.

Hint.... I've had, and still have, a bike where the BT57 is about as
    "sporty" as you can get.

Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to spoil your fun. :)

Honest, tho, I find it quite agravating when people ramble on about how
good tyre xyz is, regardless of the fact that some bikes can't get that
type of tyre because of sizes required.

Also, a given type of tyre may well suit a particular model of
motorcycle, yet may not suit another model of bike, even with the same
    size requirements.

Then we get into riding style...... :-(

Now, if only I could find a pair of BT012SS's for the RZ! ;-)

They are indeed from Metzeler. $210 for the front, $264 for the rear was the precise amount I paid for them. Expect no
change out of $500 for anything from Dunlop or Bridgestone.
