I phoned Auntie Carole. I did think about calling you, but it would have
been pointless and I'd have wasted your time tbh.

I average about 8:30. I can do *one* in 7:30, but the next one takes about
    9.

OTOH I were a real fat bastard, so I'm happy with being able to run at
    all :)

Which is pretty impressive. Personally I'd have used a car.

Well, I tend to run mostly on a treadmill. 5k is 3.12 miles, the best I've
ever done it was a smidge under 21 mins, but its usually about 22mins [1].
Good run this morning - intending to do a 28/29 min 4 miler, but felt ok so
carried on and did 10k (6.25m) in 45 mins.

IANAE, but for something like a 5k run, to pick up pace, I'd suggest doing
shorter runs, and doing them more quickly. E.g. why not do a few 1 mile
runs, and get your time between 6.5 and 7 mins. Or interval running: Say run
4/5 mins at a reasonably quick pace, then slow down to fast walk for 2 mins,
and so on. Every few days, adjust the time so that the running part is
longer and the walking part is shorter, to the point where you are running
    almost the whole time.

[1] Obviously treadmills are easier than out on the road, but putting the
treadmill on a 3% incline evens things out [2].
[2] When I do run out on the road, I tend to find it slightly easier than
the treadmill although my times are roughly the same.
