    Oh cool. Ugly fucker, innit?

I did some work with a cloggie[1] dredging company a while back, Jan de
Nul. Interesting place. Lots of *big* toys lying around.

[1] <thinks>, or was it Belgian?

Yes, but it's nice and clean. I'm doing the weld inspection on the white
    thingy at the back.

Jan de Nul sounds familiar, could be Belgian, not sure. We're doing some
work on their new dredger as we speak (almost). Being built at IHC
Kinderdijk, near Rotterdam. I think it's finished now.

That thingy looks... Important. Whereabouts in NL are you? I was based
in Apeldoorn for a while. Nice place, but (I suspect) too far inland for
    you.

I used to go to Apeldoorn a fair bit. Had a large customer there that
kept the company I ran afloat to be honest.

Can't remember that much about it except that it was about 20 or so K
south of Amsterdam. Oh, and they grew lots of flowers there and in the
    winter/spring it stank of pig-shit.

Had to be Philips or the insurance-company-whose-name-escapes-me then,
    there's ****-all else in Apeldoorn.
More than that. It's a good hour and a half's drive, IIRC.
Well, that's yer Nevverlands, that is.

    It's the 160T crane...
I'm going tomorrow (jeez, is that the time), to inspect the welds they
should have repaired after I found the cracks in it.
Our office is in Ridderkerk, just to the left of Rotterdam.

I live about 40 miles to the south, in Zierikzee. What were you doing in
Apeldoorn? I never get up there, I pass it sometimes on the way to Assen :)

All things are relative. This was a relatively small marine radio
dealer that had stiched up the market for a device that had to be
retrofitted to all boats on the rhine to identify the boats to the
    bridges.

I (partially) designed the module which kept the company I managed
afloat for about 3 years. Long enough for me to decide it was time to
    find something else to do...

Was it? Blimey seemed much closer. Still in those days (80s) I drove
an Astra SRi or GTE and went at 120mph+ almost everywhere (where the
road was clear). Only got done once in Scotland; humourless bastards,
    everywhere else let me off.

  10. I see they've cunningly painted a big F on the end that goes forwards.

Car body filler and thick paint, he'll never notice...
There's not a lot there these days I think. I worked for Philips
Computers, their UNIX machines were developed there, so I used to spend
a lot of time in the labs trying to figure out why the fucking things
had blown up *again*. Happy days...

Heh, I've seen that on the robot arms at the Blue Band factory. Spotted
straight away with the eddy current equipment (works through paint). There
    is no escape.
Blimey, how many of you guys around here work in this sort of trade? I'm
    feeling left out.

When I lived in Mid-Wales up in the hills as a kid we often missed school
because the roads were blocked with proper, deep, drifting snow.

Then Dad bought a snow-plough for the front of the Land-Rover and kept the
roads open. Dead popular with the other kids I was.

"HURRAH! HURRAH! WE *CAN* GO TO SCHOOL AFTER ALL!!"

    Particuarly when riding at night.

Recently the only twitches I've had have been on smooth tar melted in the
summer and on roads that are covered in shit. Literally.

Heh, I have, approx 30k miles - my original post said "in my limited
experience", but I took it out before hitting send :)

Still, are you going to argue the point that at night you can't anywhere
near as easily be distracted by the road surface, and that if every bit of
diesel were as deadly as elsewhere implied, you'd be off at virtually every
    corner?
