Brisbane: monsoon weather

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Brett Danvers, Dec 25, 2005.

  1. Hi All,

Just got home from work. Blazing sunshine most of the day, black
thunderclouds, lightning and driving rain for the ride home. I am really
pissed of with my wet weather gear. Since Sep 2003 I have had 3 dririder
jackets and an RJ's and they have all leaked like seives. I thought I had
the RJ jacket fixed, I painted it with Dri-za-bone grease and it appeared to
work. It kept me dry in the last heavy rain but not so today. When I got
home I was soaking wet down both arms and across the front.

Hope you are all having a happy Christmas.

I have some excellent wet weather gear, made by Toyota.

I have found most dririder gear leaks like a sieve.

    My original Alpine was great.

The replacements were nowhere near as good.

The Tiger Angel Element I wear now is excellent.

They have a very good reputation, I use a Aerostich myself which has proved
to be an excellent all weather suit.

  6. My original cheap Dririder nylon two piece rain suit kept me dry for 5
years - which is why I went with Dririder when I bought a touring jacket
with breathable and supposedly waterproof lining.

  7. I agree, When not in use my jacket hangs on a hook behind the bedroom door.
Where do I hang a soaking wet jacket to dry out? I'd rather have a jacket
that one could just wipe down and put away.

But until the 'Lotto Fairy' visits I am stuck with what I've got.

I've seen rain so rarely lately, I would just enjoy getting wet and it's
easy to do in a dri-rider with out the waterproof insert, although with the
insert I have always found it pretty good.

I'm a courier and have to be on my bike 5 days a week 50 weeks a year
regardless of weather. I've found that you're going to get wet in the
rain one way or another; if your gear isnt waterproof then you'll get
wet. If it is waterproof then you are going to sweat. Which would you
    prefer?

For me I took a different route, one that works for me, though maybe
not for some. On really hot days with a bit of rain, i just wear
normal clothes. You dry out in about half an hour. on less than
steaming hot days i wear a light (3mm) sleeveless overall wetsuit meant
for sailing underneth my jeans and shirt. These can be had for about
$150 at whitworths. Nobody can see you're wearing it, and i can do 12
hours in _pouring_ rain with a t-shirt on top and feel pretty
comfortable. I wear wetsuit booties instead of riding boots on days
like this. keeps me warm, and the water actually cools you down a bit
which is nice. if it stops raining you have to change out of it or you
    get too hot

My original Alpine, now 7 years old, is still hanging in there; and has never leaked.
I'm not looking forward to replacing mine...

MIne was bought in 1987. (I think. When they first came out anyway)

Finally stopped wearing it when it had shrunk too much in about 1996.

It usually only takes 3 years for my riding gear to shrink.

  16. That's what happens when you start storing things in dark places. Didn't
you know that dark causes clothes to shrink?

A $400 DriRider Extreme was, well, extremely water absorbent. A $35
    vinyl over-jacket keeps me dry.

$150 DriRider pants are so-so, my $40 vinyl waterproofs also keep me
    dry.

Just need to source a pair of gloves that will do the job. Short of
those rubber things that women use in the kitchen, I'm not sure if there
really area any gloves out there that will keep the hands warm and dry.
Certainly, my DriRider gloves didn't live up to their name.

Must be something about the name "DriRider". Perhaps it's one of those
    products from "Bastards Inc."....

My sister and brother-in-law are holidaying there as we speak. She lived
there for 2 years when in the Navy. Reckons that she wants to move back
there. Melbourne's boring, she reckons. Trouble is, while she expects
her partner to work in the Darwinian climate, she'll be ensconsed in her
    relatively comfortable air condished office....

Only attraction that I'd see from it personally, would be that I'd have
somewhere to stay when going up there to see the V8s at Hidden Valley.

Speaking of which, do they race bikes at HV (trying to stay on topic,
    you see...)?

    Other Activities

available to show any keen visitors around the top-end and maybe help
them snag a Barra for dinner.
There are heaps of things to do in the Northern Territory during the
idyllic months of June and July. Day trips to Litchfield Park and
camping trips to Kakadu are well worth doing and some boat owning
members have also offered a day at Manton Damn skiing and wakeboarding.
If you are keen to have a holiday at the same time don’t hesitate to
call before coming and get a local to offer some tour advice.
