Bringing a bike back from the UK

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Fraser Johnston, Jun 15, 2007.

  1. I am thinking of going on a bike tour across Europe with a mate. Tentative
plans are to buy a couple of bikes in the uk then do the tour on them. After
the tour we are considering bringing them back with us. Anyone got any idea of
how much paperwork/hassle/drama would be involved in it. I think it might be
easier to just flog them on ebay before we leave.

OK, the hint is that it isn't as easy as fronting at a bike shop in UK
(or any place else in Europe) with some cash money and buy a bike.

Most places they want a "real" address for registration (or whatever
    they call it) purposes.

Then they want similar "local" details for insurance.

Dave Milligan runs a business, effectively capitalising on the fact that
it isn't that easy to buy a bike there.

As far as getting it back here to Oz, it used to be that you had to own
    the bike o/s for over a year.....<shrug>

There is a _lot_ of checking for you to do.

    regards,

I considered bring my CBR600 with me when I emigrated. After looking into
it, I reckoned it would be more trouble than it was worth. It would have
cost around 600 Quid at 1995 prices, and it would have needed a new
speedo(UK speeedos read in MPH) and other work to get it roadworthy.
Bear in mind that any Jap bike that's been used in a British winter has
probably already got rust starting in the exhaust system as well.

    Flog 'em.

It is as easy as rocking up to a bike shop in london and forking over
cash, just did it, with a few others. even used our Australian addresses.

Buying it is the easy bit, insuring it is the tricky bit as I
understand it. Even getting 3rd party without a "proper" UK address
    apparently is hard.
