Does anyone know of a good supplier for old Brembo bits
who might know, for instance, what a rebuild kit for a
13mm master cylinder is without asking what bike it's for?

  3. I guess he's fed up with the blank looks and "oh, we don't do parts for
    them"

or maybe it's being used on a project.

I went to the motor spares shop, and asked for an indicator bulb, to get
asked "what for", well, it's for a fucking indicator, you twonk. If it was
an odd, non-standard bulb I'd have asked for it specifically, innit.

Motomecca or, possibly, motoworks - I've bought Brembo bits from both of
them as they're considerably cheaper than buying brembo bits from
    Laverda specialists.

So it's not just my LBS that suffers from that idiocy...

    <phone call>
me: "hi, have you got a DID O ring 530 by 108 chain in stock?"
    idiot: "what's it for?"
    me: "Laverda SFC1000"
idiot: "oh, we don't stock Laverda parts, we're not a Laverda dealer"
me: "I know, but you do stock DID chains?"
idiot: "oh yes, but as we're not Laverda dealers we'd need to find out
the pitch & number of links you need"
    me: "530 by 108"
    idiot: "yeah, we've got them."

When I needed brake pads for the SFC I found out which Guzzi's used the
same pads & asked for Guzzi pads - much easier than quoting part numbers
& having the idiot ask what it was for.
As was, his boss looked at me & asked when I'd bought myself a SOGuzzi.

I was in the local Motaman last year, buying a gallon of Duckhams 20w-50,
and the droid asked me what it was for.

    "Ural Dalesman."
"Oh, err, yeah. I'd recommend a 10w-40 for one of those."
"Really? For a roller-bearing big end?"
    "Err, yeah..."
"Know a lot about Russian sidecar outfits, do you?"
    "Uhh..."

Rule 1: don't try this shit with guys who are twice your age and look like
they might know what they're doing.

Are there people twice your age who aren't completely senile?

Generally, the ones that last that long seem to retain their marbles.

GPR Direct are the official UK importers, so they should
be your first port of call. They offer a rebuild service
(which I make frequent use of) for both calipers and
mastercylinders. IIRC, it is about £35 a time for a
brake master which includes the kit of spare parts.

It's all done through their Silverstone unit. You send
it off to them, they let you know how much it is and
you pay, they send it back. Probably best to give them
    a call first to discuss.

Thanks. It looks like a new master cylinder is only £25
    so not worth rebuilding.

No worries. People are often surprised at how cheap
Brembo stuff is direct from the suppliers, and as you
say, for that kind of money it's not worth rebuilding.

    Yes, but it's a rear m/c.
Ah, but that was a "radial race" one no doubt. I've just
picked up another radial billet clutch m/c for 150 which
    I was quite pleased with!

(not wanting to reply to *every* message in this thread, but...)

Yes, and there are still plenty of them on ebay.

The key to spotting them is in the stamping of the bore and
ratio on the top of the m/c, near the pivot, and also the
casting marks on the underside. Although the body is cast,
the mounting point is machined for precision. The genuine
levers are also anodised rather than painted.

Most of the sellers have got wise to this now, so they're
using catalogue pics. It's a bit of a gamble, but I'd
only buy from someone I trust, eg a mate or a shop,
unless there were pictures of the actual item.

Genuine Brembo radial "race" m/c go for around 175-225 quid
depending on currency fluctuations. A few months ago they
were being imported from the US and you could pick them up
for £160 new, but £175 is still cheap.

Yamaha R6 and R1 use a Brembo badged rear m/cyl. They're as cheap as
    chips used.

Mine came from Harris and I think they can be trusted.
Mine's a race version and the price for the cylinder, banjo bolt,
brake light sensor and a set of braided hoses was (iirc) around £225.
