A friend at work has suggested breaking and auctioning my lovely MZ on
e-bay, he reckons a friend of his did the same with a Cagiva Mito 125
and got 900gbp in total for it whereas the most he had been offered for
    it was 400gbp.

    Anyone done this?

Yes - I heard of a bloke on ukrm who had a friend of a friend do it with
a Cagiva Mito 125. Apparently, he got over twice what it was worth.

I did it a couple of years ago with my RD collection. I got probably 4
times more for the spares than I ever would have done for them whole.

  4. Yes. I had a CB400 Four which was.... well, OK in parts but needed major
    electrical attention[1]. Worth, I reckon, 600-700 quid.

It disappeared on Ebay in two weeks, every last part, and I just flogged
what was left as a job lot. Total 900-1000 quid.

The thing is, MZ parts tend to be farly cheap and available. Honda 400
Four parts are expensive and unavailable (well, some) or just expensive.
Mito parts are expensive, and teenagers crash Mitos or blow them up, and
need bits. I can't see many people paying a lot for used MZ parts.

Next-door-neighbour-but-one came to ask me for information the other
night ("you've got a big bike, you'll know"); her eldest son turns 17
in a few weeks, and he wants a Mito - he's currently attempting to
terrorise the town on a Honda 50cc trailie of some sort. I found the
address of the nearest Cagiva dealer for her, and gave her a couple of
old MCN Bikemart pullouts I found lying around the place for good
measure. I also told her it's quite an expensive bike for what it is,
and will need to be looked after properly regarding maintenance as the
engine will self-destruct in no time if neglected. Hubby repairs
lawnmowers, so "knows all about 2-strokes" and "will do all of that
for him". Promises to be quite entertaining...
