I haven't used 'starter fluid' in ages. I had a smalish chimney starter,
but it didn't want to work in the rain so I went electric. I throw in
Guinness soaked oak chips for the smell/flavor.

I've got a (more) healthy respect for petrol now after pouring it on
hot charcoal on a pedestal barbie. I thought there were flames in there
and expected it to flare up nicely, but it didnt, so I left it to
permeate the coals (read this as filling the pedestal with petrol
    vapour) and light.

Fair rattled the neighbours windows and parted my hair somewhat.

Backyard fuel/air bombs are not good for me old ticker ;)

  4. Because the food/goods/stuff doesn't have to travel so far and thus
    incurs a lower carbon debt?

That's what Cheryl is programming me for at the moment. And she works
for the National Environment Research Council so she must be right :)

I can't think of any reasons that make sense. Perhaps you could
    enlighten me.

Some 5.1 fluid left me with a nice burn on my hand when
refitting the brakes to the bike at the start of the season.
It probably got in under the latex gloves and sat there for
a while. Started like an itch and ended up like a proper
heat burn for about a week, just without the blister.

Really? Christ, when I was struggling with the brakes on the 7R a
couple of winters ago I was effectively bathing my hands in hydraulic
fluid on a nightly basis. Didn't seem to suffer an ill effects.

Doesn't sound like you're going to. You're just a typical wanker who
likes to say things like "I prefer to buy British" without any thought
    out justification.

Thats right, anyone who doesn't agree with Champ or doesn't want to
    explain themselves is a wanker.

  12. Brake fluid dermatitis is odd. I've had a flareup of it, but only the
once, many years ago. Since then, nothing. Of course, I could be storing
up a severe reaction to it sometime in the future.

Mind you, most of the time since the first occasion I've been using
    barrier cream when bleeding brakes.

  13. There is a very good case for agreeing with the second part of your
    statement.

It was odd because it has never happened before and there
have been plenty of times in the past when it has got onto
    my hands.

It might have been a prolonged exposure, or maybe some
reaction with the latex glove, or even a difference in
    the various flavours of fluid?

  15. Everyone has made this mistake. Once.

When I made it, the whole bloody gallon can of petrol caught fire too.

ISTR hearing of a tale of an attempted theft of an MZ125 where the
thief died in situ, having got brake fluid on his hands.

Down your way it was, or was it nearer to Platy?

I disagree with Champ on this issue, (and related ones). However, I'm
quite willing to justify my view. Either way, I doubt he'd call me a
    wanker.[1]

But I'll give you an opportunity to embarrass yourself further, first.

[1] I know where you live, Champion, and I'm sure your garage wouldn't
respond well to a gallon of petrol and a match.

  18. I'll have a crack at this, although in my case I try to buy locally[1]
if possible and to use local garages / tradesmen[2] for work. This is
so I circulate my money in my community if possible[3]. I assume the
OP is extending this to the country as a whole, where unfortunately it
all falls down. Extending the mutual beneficial relationship beyond
    immediate contacts just doesn't work.

[1] Meat from local butcher, eggs & milk from local farm.
[2] Local garage for the cars, local plumber[4]
[3] I apply the same principle for my other home

    Which is?

If I'd made a comment about you or something which in someway related
to/with you, I can see your point.

But for comments about anything else, almost demanding they reveal the
reasons behind it, and throwing a rattle when the person who made the
comment refuses to elaborate, as they've got a perfect right to do,
    seems so childish.

People can have perfectly valid reasons for not wanting to explain
something, including "don't be so bloody nosey" :)
