HD says DOT 5, Halfords only stocks DOT 5.1

For the purposes of slowing the tractor, are they the same thing?

If you do not upgrade to 5.1 you may find that the tractor succumbs to
    attack by worms.

How much worse could the brakes be?

you CAN NOT mix DOT 5 and 5.1, 5.1 is totally different and will gell
up if you add it to any other DOT 1-2-3-4-5 . Urine is DOT 1 by the
    way :)

so if you have had normal brake fluid in the pipes don't use DOT 5.1

  6. NO
    There's merkin logic for you.
5.1 is not an upgrade of 5.
Wrong, incorrect, not right, you muppet, and totally contratictory to
    your previous statement.

DOT 5.1 is compatible with 3, 4 etc.

DOT 5 is the silicon based one and should not be mixed with 3, 4 etc.

    So...

If I put in 5.1 instead it will be OK, but I shouldn't top up 5 with
    5.1?

That's how I read it anyway.

As others have said you cannot mix DOT 5 with DOT 5.1 unless you want
your seals to go bye bye. I'm curious as to why HD use DOT 5 in the first
    place, anybody know why?

After the lid vibrated off on the way to Avebury a couple of weeks ago I
pressure washed the bike to get all the fluid off so I'm basically
running water in there at the moment. I suspect any sort of brake fluid
    would be better than that

You think you're in trouble. My brakes are dot net. They don't work and
no one understands why, or what they were supposed to do in the first
    place.

No, once you've had DOT 5 in your brakes you can only use/top up with DOT
    5, you can't use DOT 3,4 or 5.1. It's a bit like mixing normal 2 stroke
    oil and Castrol R.

Dot net - Luxury! I once rode a bike with dot com brakes, they worked
really well for a short while, then just collapsed.

Best I call in at the Harley dealer then for some Harley Davidson (tm)
Screamin' Eagle (r) race brake fluid (r) at a price significantly
different to the 5.1 in Halfords then
