I am preparing for return to work. There have been no adverse
intellectual effects. Tiredness is annoying but should be short lived.
All in all, everyone, me included, is happy with my reaction to the
treatment. Whilst there is no doubt that I have a potentially life
threatening disease, I appear to be firmly situated to the left of the
frequency/outcome bell curve, and of course that pleases me no end!
    I've had a brainwave.
It has always been an ambition to do a solo round Australia trip on
    the RT.
the date has always been around early spring 2012.
It occurs to me there might be an opportunity to involve Cancer Care
organisations. There are plenty of these, so I do not think there will
be a problem here. I think some form of sponsorship would be nice too.
There are the usual suspects eg BMW, UralofOs etc. There may well be
others but I have no experience in this area.
There is plenty, and it is only a partly formed germ of an idea.
    Anyone like to comment?

    just go for it
looks like you have been given a reprieve
and the incentive to make the most of every day

first step would be to contact your local Cancer Care group
(more than likely they will be able to assist you and point you in the
direction of likely sponsors and supportive community groups in your
    locality e.g. Lions, Rotary etc)

    best of luck

    Yup! Is good news. :)
Uh oh, this could be dangerous.
Do you mean in just over a year's time?
I guess it depends on what you really want to achieve.

Was the original plan blazing round the island, perhaps not trying for a
record time, but, never the less, doing it fairly briskly?

If so, maybe, assuming you can afford it, you might want to consider
skipping around sponsorship deals and "charity ride" stuff.

I remember talking to Stephen Dearnley (U.C. #1) after his round Oz trip
on a Honda Silverwing, and he said that the hardest bit of the ride was
once he stopped riding and had to socialise, after a long day in the saddle.

OTOH, if time taken is no object, and you are happy with the obligations
required for a sponsored ride, you might want to involve the Ulysses
Club (IIRC you might be a member!) since they have a wide spread of
members and more than a few who have done the round Oz trip.

Personally, I consider that when one gets some kind of sponsorship, it
then ties you...... basically, the whole thing becomes WORK, and I have
never been too impressed with that. <shrug>

A good thought. Thanks for that.
Cam thanks for the advice - all commonsense stuff, and certainly grist
    for the mill.

The roads around Australia are getting pretty crowded with people
roaming around raising awareness of one thing or another. I've never
understood how riding thousands of km of the least populated roads in
Australia could help raise money or awareness of anything (whatever that
is). Call me cynical but a lap of the country is going to cost about
$2000 once you factor in fuel, accomodation, tyres and some service
items. Why not just stay home and give $2000 to charity. A month spent
door knocking in major population centres on the east coast would surely
raise far more money than if you were riding deserted highways.

On the other hand, if you just want to go for a ride around the country,
all the best and enjoy the ride :)

    Thanks Nev.
I'm guessing that when common sense kicks in again, I will be taking
    that advice :)

I sort of agree with Nev. Unless you're a media-hound seeking
publicity in exchange for a palty amount of very hard-earned
donations, you can save yourself a huge amount of stress by abandoning
that "noble" cause and just having a leasurely and therefore much more
therpeutic ride around Australia. That's my cycnical two bob's worth.

But whichever road you take, I wish you a save and pleasant journey,
    George.

    Thanks to you too Gerry.
You, Nev and Cam all make perfect sense. I suppose noble causes are
all very well, but should not come at the expense of sanity. As I
tried to say, there is plenty of time for reflection and review, and I
will certainly do that before any commitments are made.
Thank you all again for your input.

Thought 1. Publish your itinerary. I ride out 100km or so towards you
to a landmark (pub) go 200km with you and hopefully 100km home.
That's a day off work for me.

Thought 2. Some guy did it on a moped not long ago and it took him 14
days on Highway #1 (yawn). Take longer and do the recommended rides
from the motorcycle atlas. Especially near me ;-)

Thought 3. If you do decide to raise money for charity, I can get a
photograph of me handing you a check/cheque.
