    Hi folks,
I have a 1954 M33 which is a bugger to kick start so I'm thinking of getting
an electronic ignition kit such as the Boyer one. Does anyone have any
comments about this in terms of good or bad? Or know of any major problems I
    could be heading for?!
    Cheers

No experience of an M33, but I've got a Boyer Bransden ignition system on my
Z650, easy enough to install and set up, provided you have a timing light,
though they did send me the instuctions for the wrong kit, phoned em up and
the guy talked me through it no problems, so support was fine. Done about
2500 miles without missing a beat. My mate's got one for his A65 but hasn't
fitted it yet but read the guff that came with it and it lokks
    straightforward.

Am sure you will need 12 volt electrics to run a Boyer. That means
converting your dynamo to 12 volts which isn't that difficult but unless
your dynamo is in top condition it will not produce enough power to run
ignition & lights very well. You will also need a coil & all new bulbs.

You are looking at a lot of expense to do what you want to do. I think you'd
be better off getting your magneto reconditioned. This costs around £100
depending how bad it is & breaths life into it for another 20 years or so.
There is no reason why magneto ignition in good condition shouldn't give
    first time starting.

Also are you sure it's the ignition at fault? The old adage goes, if you
think you have an ignition problem, check the carb.

    Hi Iggy,
-Good question! The dynamo has already been reconditioned to 12v and the
carb is practically brand new. It started fine back in August, but after
standing for a couple of months I'm just not getting it going at all.
Compression seems okay and the carb does emit a healthy cough every so
often, but at the moment I just seem to be leaping up and down endlessly!
And yes, it does keep flooding because of this! Any ideas??

Thus spake Iggy unto the assembled multitudes:
Good advice. My Trident wouldn't start on Friday evening, but when I
switched the fuel to reserve it fired up after a few prods. The red fuel
light had been on all the way to work, so it must have been on the point of
cutting out when I had parked it that morning.

I think I'd get the magneto checked by someone that knows about these
things. When my ES2 magneto packed up, it began with poor cold starting &
then, within a short time, gave up altogether. You seem to have covered all
    the other angles.

Also you will probably get flamed at any moment for top posting. People can
    be very pedantic here.
