  1. It pisses me off to see those helicopters miss used in such a way when I
have supported and helped to support the Air Ambulance a much needed
    service that relies on charity.

How about take the helicopters away from any force who mis-uses them as
speed traps, convert them for Air Ambulance use and allow the police to
use them only when they have good cause.

Simply removing it is probably the most effective.

Snap it off leaving a screw and some yellow, if you get stopped it's a
case of "Blimey, it was there when I left. Of course I'll get a
    replacement".

It's definitely "if" you get stopped, I was followed by the police when I
didn't have a number plate and they didn't take any action. Other
occasions I've swanned about for days without one.

I was reversing away from a traffic warden who was standing in
front of the car. I figured running him over wasn't a good idea, so
reversed 200 metres. Got a letter from the police a few days later.

How about carrying it in your luggage? "It fell off just now, I'll fit
it when I get home, officer."
I noticed the angle of Whinging Courier's plate at the weekend, it's
almost horizontal and I'd be surprised if it could be read by any
automated cameras. WC, do you get stopped for your plate much? I guess
it's hard to tell which feature of that magnificent machine has
    attracted their attention though.

When I was a lot younger, me and a few mates used to have reverse races
round the block. Fastest time won, until I got my automatic Audi Coupe,
then they gave up, because nobody could touch my time. :)

As it's a camera van as opposed to Plod... why bother with the U-turn?

Someone who drives down Bevis Marks / Houndsditch on a regular
basis has the same set of "funny" noises on their bike or car,
as we can hear it from our office.

It was only when I met you at Nigel's and you rode off then
did the horse noise that I thought the above and yourself may
    be the one and same.

  10. In uk.rec.motorcycles, rb amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
Of course, what better way to have someone not read your plate?
It can't be read easily from a following car or bike, I know that much -
In fact, if you're more than about 20 or 30 yards away it doesn't look
like it's got a plate at all. I don't know about it being not read by
cameras as a camera points downwardly angled and I'm sure some of the
    plate could be read[1].

About your other point: I have been stopped quite a few times but mostly
in London and mostly when it first looked much like it does now. I think
they must've PNCd it to death and now know the bike's safe, I don't seem
to get stopped as much now but having said that I've been stopped in the
last couple of weeks. Once I'm stopped the plate does get a mention but
I reckon they just want to know the bike's kosher, which it is.

[1] SWK - Is it possible to identify a vehicle from just the first few
digits and then cross reference those digits with likely matches?

  11. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Verdigris amazed us all with this pearl of
    wisdom:
Getting told to clean it is how I was dealt with 99% of the time. The
other 1% was getting a ticket from the facking parks police of all
people[1]. Nowadays it's "that plate looks dodgy", "OK, I didn't know it
    was but I'll fix it"
    That bike's looovely :)
