I was at a mountain bike festival in the early 90's (I think it was
    either 94 or 95).

On the Saturday night we all hit the beer tent and got comprehensively
rat-arsed. Crawled back to the tent around midnight and crashed out.
Had a weird dream about lots of flashing lights.

Woke up to the afore-mentioned coppers.

Anyway, turns out the two guys in the tent next to ours had had an
argument about some drugs, one stabbed the other who then bled to
death pretty sharpish because the cocktail of drugs he'd been taking
had prevented his blood from clotting.

The chap who did the stabbing had then done a runner into the woods.
The Police were called and arrived fully tooled up with dogs to search
    the woods and surrounding area.

They assumed that everyone had been woken up by the sirens, lights,
ambulance etc and put up the incident tape and guards to protect the
    crime scene.

Me and my mate coming out of the tent in the morning gave them a bit
of a shock and their first though was one of us was the murderer and
had hidden in the tent overnight, hence the guns.

The rest of the day was quite surreal as the incident line was tied to
the top of out tent and around my car meaning I had to ask a coppers
permission every time I wanted to go near it. Drove home with it
still on the car :) My mate cooking sausages on the stove with a big
****-off knife caused a few looks as well.

They didn't get the guy on the day, got him eventually about 6 months
later and I think he got 5 years.

Do you have a sleeping bag? If so I'm sure that accomodation can be found
    in somebody's tent for you.

  4. When I bought mine last year, Halfords did a 3 man tent, sleeping bag
and a foam sleeping mat for less than £40.

It never occurred to them to have a look in the tent in the first
    place? <boggle>

Apparently not. They assumed anyone normal would have woken up and
    come out.

No, I don't have a sleeping bag. I've never even considered camping
before. I never intended to camp anywhere. It's all very new. I
have a massive storage problem on the bike too. Need to do something
    about it all.

I will have to investigate this tomorrow while my bike is having new
    shoes (tyres) fitted.

I've got absolutely nowhere to put all of this tent/sleeping bag
business though, let alone a change of clothes.

The tent and the bag (in a bin bag for rain-resistance) go on the
pillion seat, across the seat, secured by bungees or cargo straps.

As your bike is your only form of transport, sooner or later you will
need to carry something on it - a tank bag is the ideal solution if
you don't already have a rucksack.

  16. What bike do you have? a 500cc IIRC.

You should be able to stick a change of clothes and ablution material in
a rucksack. The tent and ground mat will roll up tight. A cargo net and
some bungee cords well tied down will secure all your kit (including the
rucksack) to the pillion part of your bike seat. Your bike should have
little hooks lower than the bottom edge of your seat to allow the
bungees or similar to attach. Otherwise there will be bits of the bike
frame / panels that will do.

If you really feel the need to push the boat out then some bike luggage
like a tail pack or throwover panniers are a decent thing to buy.

http://www.oxprod.com/ is a big manufacturer of all this sort of kit
    but there are others.

Read the fixing instructions for luggage as it is important to make
    stuff cannot move about!

I sleep outside. Sometimes in a tent. Sometimes where I fall.

Apart from that, I'm at a loss as to how you expect me to know *anything*...

I managed to get all my gear onto my old CB500 and make it to BOSM and back.

Tank Bag, cargo net, mini ratchet straps and bungees are all you need.
