I've looked fairly hard for answers to no avail.

    Concerning XP home edition:

[1] If I attempt to open or even pass the mouse over an avi in explorer I
get an explorer crash (windows has closed this program) and a message about
Date Execution Prevention. Doesn't happen in XP pro on another machine and
    avis will play in WMP.

[2] Somewhere there has to be a setting for this: Some programs revert files
back to previous versions, ie, a text file that is a user.ini repeatedly
goes back to an earlier version that doesn't actually exist anymore that I
can see. Is there some kind of auto backuprestore bs or something? It's
    freaking me out quite frankly.

There is a "system restore" thing, and there's a number of checks where
if you change a file Windows will try to put it back (I thought the
only files affected were .dll though).

    Try disabling your system restore:

Right click on my computer, then click properties.
    Choose system restore tab.
Turn it off, then ok everything. There will be some hard disk whirring
    as it deletes the backups.

I'd recommend going back and turning it on again. You've deleted the
backups so if it is this that's causing the problem, it won't now. I'd
get the other problem sorted out first though - if you need to use the
system restore to fix that you'll be out of luck if you do this first.

Don't I then lose all the restore points? Sounds a bit dodgy.

Yes, but if it's just going to restore you back to a knackered system
    do you really need them?

Well [1] It's not knackered, it just needs tweaking and [2] I don't see how
the restore thingy is to blame for reverting some files back to previous
    versions but not others.

Yes. FWIW, in two years of working for myself and several years working
for other people before that, I have never had a system restore solve the
problem that it was invoked to solve. I have managed to use it to get a
system to boot in the past, but it still needed a re-install to get it
    working properly.

The reason, AIUI, that it is restoring some files and not others is to do
with the 'protected' OS files. XP has a list of files that should not be
altered without 'permission' as it were. The list can be altered by some
virii [1] to ensure that they can re-infect a system even wehn removed by
    AV measures.

[1] This may not be strictly accurate, but as a methodology for preventing
virus re-infection, it has served me well.

Well I've turned system restore off and back on while applying virus
removal tools and the previous restore points were still apparently there
afterwards. I think. However with windows, stuff that looks like it's
still there won't necessarily work though...

The documentation is pretty clear on that point. They *should* be deleted
    but, it is Windows................
