    Proof? WRT a bible story?

Well, they had some discrepancies from the NT.
    (crucifixion accounts, loaves/fishes, etc.)

They pointed out that the Magi came from the East. In the tradition of
Buddhists looking for the reincarnation of a Lama.

There are references to this Jus Asaf chap in local folklore, etc,
from the age of 14 to 29. Apparently, there are no references to JC in
    the NT for this period.

Why did Joseph of Aramathea take aloe into the tomb? Aloe is a herb
for curing, not embalming. JC apparently died v quickly for a
    crucifixion.

Lost tribes Israel taken East by Assyrians: job of "Messiah" would
    include reuniting T of I.

I have no beliefs in this, one way, 'tother, or which, but it was well
    presented.

One could see how the early church would want to keep it a bit quiet,
though. I shouldn't think the current bunch would be that thrilled
    about it.

JA's tomb is beneath a Muslim tomb of another Holy man: there's no way
they're gonna get dug up soon.

Intriguingly, JA's tomb is aligned E/W, the other bloke N/S, or the
other way round. Anyhoo, one is buried in the Muslim tradition; one
    Jewish.

That's all I can remember off the top of me 'ead.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, mups
My understanding was that "normal" crucifixion was done by tying the
wrists and ankles to the cross. The poor bastard died from thirst /
exposure / heart attack caused by the weight of the body hanging on the
    arms.

The story runs that JC was nailed up because the local plod thought he
might be the subject of a rescue attempt.

But this is all hazy stuff, garnered from a slightly pervy RE teacher
with a definite S&M thang, many moons ago

    Fairy nuff.
Discrepancies from the NT tend to creep in because we have 4 people
attempting to tell the same story, all based on 2nd or 3rd hand accounts.
None of them had the intention of writing part of a book, they were all
trying to do the whole thing.
The only work that I know of that describes the childhood of Jesus is the
Infancy Gospel of Thomas, which is a very heretical work (Christians,
understandably, have issues with a "gospel" that describes how young Jesus
performs miracles for fun and kills people who piss him off). TBH it's not
really taken very seriously even by non-christian scholars.
I always have problems with the early church trying to keep things quiet,
because it never sounds very feasible. The early church was a fragment body
of hundreds of small churches with no clear heirarchy or even a fully
coherent belief system. There was no way it could act as a unified body (as
is seen by the birth and, normally, death of hundreds of factions of
christianity in the early years right throught to Iconoclasts versus
    Iconodules centuries later).
Interesting stuff. I'll have to watch out for a repeat of it.

And *this* is the very conversation between me, dnc and Kimberley that
resulted in me having bruises the size of large things on both arms after
the BOSM after I'd tried to explain how *some* forms of pain (eg piercings,
tattoos etc) could, if done properly, have an enjoyable element in the same
way that riding a bike at 150-odd mph can... Ish.

Tell tou what. Start the conv with dnc on Saturday and dont flinch when he
grabs yer arm and tries to rip your bicep off[1]... Of course it *will*
    hurt the next day.

Which was, of course, edited in around 900AD IIRC, as certain people
were 'mis-interpreting' the 'facts' and twisting them for their own
reasons and where therefore denounced as 'heretics' while the 'easily
    misleading' sections were removed

And yes, rather embarrassingly for the Vatican, letters written by the
Cardinal who did the editing were found, which contained small sections
    of the missing passages

Which conveniently bypasses the small historical problem that
crucifixion was a punishment reserved exclusively for 'enemies of the
state' - in other words, political enemies

But then there are rather a lot of historical inaccuracies regarding the
events surrounding the crucifixion, especially where the Jews and
    Judaism is concerned
