Thinking of part ex-ing my bike and all the dealers tell me what top book is
but I'd like to check. What book do they actually refer to and is it
    available online anywhere?

Glasses guide is what they're on about and it's trade only. What they offer
you for your part-ex depends on more than what the guide says.

I agree with most of what you said but its worth noting that of the three
dealers I've shown my bike (2001 Hornet, 29K miles) to NONE have started the
engine and one dealer didn't even go outside to look at it! They just asked
me what I wanted to buy and then looked in their little book!

Do dealers generally sell things more easily with a standard can? That'll
leave my Scorpion to sell on eBay!

  4. There are two books - Glass's and CAP. CAP, IMHO, gives rather more
accurate prices. And no, they're trade only (and very expensive).

These books quote trade-in prices in "ordinary" and good condition for
all bikes, plus the dealer suggested selling price.

With some bikes you throw the book out of the window - old model Yamaha
Fazer 600s, for example. They're in huge demand. Likewise, in winter,
book prices are useless - people sell cheap and canny dealers buy cheap
and stash the bikes away until spring.

It might help if you let us know what bike you're thinking of p/exing
and then we can give you a pretty accurate quote.

    Thanks.... I have a:

2001 Hornet, 29K miles but in very good condition (pipes look almost new
    after a warantee replacement etc.).

The bike I'm thinking of trading it in for is a:

2001 GSXR 600 K1, 4.5K miles, VGC apart from a scuff to right hand fairing
    badly repainted.

They are offering mr the Gixxer for £3999 with £1900 for my bike. As
suggested in another thread I have looked on bike trader etc since the
Gixxer looked over priced but the only thing within a hundred miles that
even touches that prices is 98 miles away and although it has done 1K miles
less it is private so I wont get any warantee. With a warantee I can check
for frame/fork alignment and get them to sort it if theres anything bad
    there.

In other shops I have been offered £2200 on my bike but that was for an R6,
Y reg, 9K miles for £4899 and the worst of all was a similar Gixxer to the
above for £5000 and £1500 for my bike. Both of which seem a terrible deals!

Ok, how about asking them if they'll do that deal and do you a
replacement fairing panel at cost? Then the bike would be
    cosmetically perfect again.

about negociating trade-ins and the spring should see Gixers popping up
Oh! The reason why I'm thinking of doing this now is cos I expected Winter
to provide the cheapest second hand prices and by trading up a cheaper bike
for a more expensive one I'd be saving more. But perhaps you're right.

Well there's nothing wrong with your plan, but only if you can find the right
    bike for the right price.

If you wanted to be ruthless then you could take the view that private sellers
who are flogging their bikes now probably have a reason for doing so, rather
than waiting until the summer. You could find something that has been sitting
in MCN or Bike Trader for a couple of weeks and make a stupid offer on it,
hoping that the seller needs the cash.

BTW, I wouldn't put too much store in dealer warranties, especially if you're
talking about have the straightness of the frame and forks checked out, because
you then have to prove that the bike was like that when you bought it, which
may involve engineers reports and other hassle.

The other option is that, if you are looking at 4-5 grand 600s and are prepared
to accept last years models, then you are probably not that far off ball-park
for a new machine. I don't know if any of the sports 600s are expecting new
models this spring, but if they are then you can get a good deal by helping a
dealer clear floor space for incoming stock. As an example, I bought my
current bike in December 2000 and, including 300 quid cash-back from Kawasaki,
    it only cost me £4,600.

There is a new GSXR600 due out so K3 model ones should be going for
    pennies.

There you go then - flog the Hornet privately and phone around a load of
dealers to see who desperately needs to shift old stock.

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a few pre-registered ones that can be had as
    well.

  14. I'd walk away, really.

I'd value the Hornet at ukp2.5k as a trade-in: 1900 is taking the piss.
nd the GSXR is overpriced too.

That means a cost to change, on their deal, of ukp2100. Too much. It's
the middle of winter. Wait a bit.

  15. It is a good idea if you're buying, yes. But you're selling as well,
    remember.

I still think those prices you've been quoted are silly.
