    John,
How are you converting the Real Audio stream to mp3?

I've located Streambox VCR which allows me to capture the RA stream to
a file, but I'm casting about for a conversion utility.

I'm using Creative Recorder to capture the mixer output and then using
J River Media Centre to convert the resulting .wav file to .mp3.

I'm pretty sure there are dedicated tools to capture and convert
streaming audio but this works well enough for me. Format conversion
utilities are 10 a penny, I'm pretty sure Winamp does it too.

I knew there were utilities that would let you tee the sound card's output
into a WAV file, but I would like a SW utility to do it without needing
to involve any sound hardware, also I would like to avoid needing to
perform the capture in real time. Streambox VCR lets me download the
stream at a higher than 1x rate.

Ideally I'd like to be able to do it all on a Linux box, by command line
utilities, (although I can do X-based GUI stuff) which I can control
    remotely via ssh.

It's repeated on Sky Travel at 9.30pm Wednesdays and around 9pm Sundays.

  10. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Streambox Ripper works for me, but I don't know if there's a linux
    version.

Sadly, the Streambox Ripper 2.009 component of the SVCR 2.0 suite that I
downloaded doesn't work. I get a big error dialog box saying it can't
find wmaudsdk.dll. The recorder bit seems to work well, at least for
the Book of The Week bits I downloaded from BBC Radio 4 site.

If you receive a DLL error when trying to run Streambox Ripper,
you probably need to install the windows media support pack,
wmaudioredist.exe, located in the streambox ripper directory.

thanks to rvalm for pointing out this problem."

I also found numerous complaints about missing wmaudsdk.dll and places
    where I could download it...

"I was born a poor black child."

Did you read the snipped part of my post where I admitted my thickness
and gave the resolution to the missing DLL prob?

Obmoto: I rode the missus' EX250 to work today as I flattened the SV's
battery by leaving the heated grips switched on for two days[1]... the
EX is a fun little thing, but it sure does need a good caning to move
    on[2] down the road.
