I've ridden both the Bonnie and the Scrambler.

The suspension on the bonnie is way to soft for dirt road with potholes
etc. and it bottoms out at very moderate speeds.

The Scrambler rides like a dray but doesn't bottom out so as long as one
is happy to bounce across the tops of the bumps and keep the speed up
it'll actually go quite quickly on dirt.

Great to hear. Both are fun I'm sure.

But - were the measurments above for bonnie and scrambler, or were
they for bonnie and thruxton ?

So by that logic an R1 is a better dirt road bike than a V Strom ?

I assume you're taking back your assertion that it has more ground
    clearance then ?

If you want the bonnie to "ride like a dray so you can bounce across
the top of the bumps" wind the preload right up - then you have two
bikes with the suspension inappropriately setup for the intended
    purpose...

The scrambler isn't a dirt road bike in anything other than looks.

(which for the record look cool, I rather like the bonnie range - I'd
probably buy a thruxton and an America if I had unlimited garage space)

The R1 has less suspension travel than a V strom though.
More 'effective' ground clearance was what I meant (and no).
Neither is the V-Strom to be honest (ask most people on ADV).

I rather like them too, a bit top heavy and a bit sanatized... but not
    half bad.
