I'm not very good at mornings at the best of times, so whilst Jackie went for breakfast, I had an extra hour's kip. I then had a shower whilst Jackie packed the panniers. The last few bits and pieces were then packed into the big Kappa case, bike loaded, bill settled and autoroute joined. Up to Caen, onto Le Havre and stop for a pee about 20 miles further up the autoroute. I asked Jackie if she'd packed the passports and ticket, to which she replied that she assumed I'd put them in the case. Except they weren't. Had it only been the ticket that was back at Villedieu les Poeles, then the sod it and just get to Calais option would have been taken. As it was, an unscheduled 240 mile detour, 1.5ish tanks of fuel and an extra €5 worth of tolls were required. Before leaving the hotel for the second time, we did ask if it was possible to swap onto the Le Havre - Portsmouth crossing. As we hadn't booked the tickets directly with P&O they wouldn't allow us to change. Still, looking on the bright side, we did go over Pont de Normandie and the Le Havre canal viaduct 3 times, which was nice. I think. We managed to get to Calais in time for the 7:15p.m. ferry, so only 4 hours later than planned. Yes, received and replied.

enough with the crocodiles[1] already. [1] except, anyone wanting to read one of the best works of fiction of recent years, should read this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0552770825/qid=1064230359/
Hmm. What I need is some sort of list of books I ought to buy. My reading list is a bit full atm, as last week I bought - Life of Pi - The Sexual Life of Catherine M - er, another one I can't remember (a Nick Hornby?) - Psychology for Dummies [1] [1] yes, yes, ha bloody ha.
why is everyone buying this? It looks *ghastly* I almost bought that the other day. You should try Houllebecq's "Atomised" and "Platform" if you want something that's a) intellectual and b) full of sex. bit late for a career change.

Take a look at "The Blank Slate" by Stephen Pinker - though I'm not sure whether what he has to say will have you nodding in agreement, or seething ....
Michel Houellebecq: "Platform" (though you might want to read "Atomised" first, which is almost as good). Neil Astley: "The End of My Tether" Alasdair Gray: "Lanark: A Life in Four Books" Patrick Suskind: "Perfume" Hilary Mantel: "A Place of Greater Safety" Steve Aylett: "Only an Alligator" J.G.Ballard: "Supercannes" that should keep you going until the middle of next year.
Err darsy how would you describe your taste in books? I'm amazed at the amount of stuff you seem to get through. Also do you read loads of reviews to help you determine your next round of purchases or just accept that you'll occasionally buy something you really don't like?
I don't like shit books - any thing else goes. I read a lot more stuff than I'd recommend. I probably read 4-5 books a week. sometimes - if I've read a lot of books by a particular author, I'll usually buy whatever next they write. sure - quite often I'll just spend an hour in a bookshop reading opening paragraphs and the blurb, and come out with 9-10 books, maybe 3-4 of which will be good, 3-4 "OK" and 2 or 3 "just about OK" and 1-2 crap. I do read "crap" as well, sometimes, well, pulp like Ian Rankin and Janet Evanovich (no, really, they're quite funny, if chick-books).
