Bollocks, Iphone got moist.

  1. I was outside in a massive hailstorm earlier with my iphone, it got
wet and now the backlight won't work. I guess it's damp so I have
stuck it in a plastic bag with a load of sachets of silica gel to try
to get the moisture out, any other sugggestions ? Apart from, Get an
Android, microwave it, stick it in the oven etc.

  2. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Speedgazebo MOTP
Take it back to where you bought it and get a refund. It is clearly
    unfit for purpose.

Even if it were possible to remove the battery, that wouldn't help much.
Even small water droplets can cause significant damage to PCB's and
impair correct functioning of the units.

Well, we had our daughter put a dect phone in the washer once, it went
    through at 60 degrees.

Took the battery out, put it on the rdiator for a day or two. Worked fine!

  8. Well, I'm not so sure. Most PCBs have solder resist and much of the
circuitry is embedded within internal layers of GRP anyway, so the only
bits that would get affected are the component contacts; these aren't
going to corrode instantly with no power. Removing the battery quickly
would significantly reduce the effects of galvanic corrosion, which could
very rapidly damage the circuit board. There'd still be some due to this
    various dissimilar metals used.

I guess that something like coffee might leave high-resistance shorts
that could affect high-impedance bits of circuit, though.

Long exposure to damp is another matter, of course. I can recall a car
radio I once had whose exposed PCB tracks had literally rotted away.

  10. I've left it overnight and now it works but there's no back light.
I've spent ages taking it to bits and pissing around with it and it
still won't come on. I think it's shagged.

There is, however a deal through Carphone Whorehouse with 3 for an
iPhone 4,£69 up front, £35 pcm 2000 mins, unlimited data and more txts
    than I can use.

Despite being 3, it sounds good to me.

Dunno about Iphones, but due to an unfortunate Scraggy<>Highland loch
interface last autumn, both my HTC TD2 and pikeycam from Lidl required a
    touch of de-hydrofication.
Removed batts within 5 mins of exit from water, shook excess out,
placed on kitchen roll on gas heater. Following day reassembled and
    both are still working fine.

Ah, but I didn't insinuate "always". IIRC, it can depend upon the
    content of the water.

3 used to be total crap where we are, but they seem to have fixed it as it's
been nothing less than monumentally reliable for the last 12 months. Only
one place I've been to where it's a telephone black hole and that's the
Rossendale Valley, but even commercial radio doesn't seem to get through to
    there either.

All I know from the experience in working with my Co's repair centre is
that water can cause no end of issues. So much so, that they've got the
skill of spotting water droplets and taking pics of them down to a fine
    art.

New screen and backlight for less than £20 on ebay and it's pretty easy to

    Speedgazebo MOTP #1 wibbled forthrightly:
They gave me €150 and I kept my old iPhone (which I sold on for €170),
so my iPhone 4 cost me about €100.

  20. I saw them on there, but I Googled the fault and several posters who
had done the same thing had found that the moisture had damaged the
    motherboard, rather than the display.
I need the phone for work and I can't afford to be without it so I
went for a shiny new one, becaus as we all know, shiny things make it
    all right !
