  1. Argh.

    Yes.

But. I. Was. Wondering. If. They. Did. It. Differently. In. France.

    Correct.

In the past, what the score has been, is that European offenders in the
UK have to surrender their euro licence and exchange it for a UK one
    with said points added.

    It's the same in France.

Old fashioned tourism industry: Our local cops have credit card terminals
for paying on the spot (50% discount for early payment, and it also adds
points to the Visa cash return program, beautiful, innit?)

Yes, but on this subject you are a wind-up merchant of epic
proportions. Remember our conversation about "speed cameras the size
of grapefruit attached to the back of traffic signs"?

Not "cameras on M5 motorway gantries" lost in "dodgy accent"
    translation?

Ah. I've been in touch with Hertz. The bad I was actually
flashed four times, hence four notifications. Erk.

The better the French authorities send the ticket details
directly to me, and not Hertz. So I might ignore it. Or rather, them.

Indeed. The annoying thing is that these must have been off the
motorways, on which I'd set the cruise control to legal levels.
Flashed once on the way out and three times on the way back. I never
even saw a flash go off....

I dunno. Boxerboy is a local beak and ought to know about things like
that. And it's precisely the sort of nasty behaviour from the Forces
of Law and Order that we've come to expect.

I've certainly not heard of it, mind.

What worried me was the report in the Sunday Times yesterday about
using remotely operated unmanned spy drones (as used in Iraq and
Afghanistan) to monitor and nick speeders.

Now there's an interesting question. Do the fixed cameras on the
autoroute 'know' if it is raining?

Let me get this straight. If this goes to the worst case, does that
mean the French can nobble my UK licence? That's not good news.

It's highly unlikely though. I think that they're more likely to do
this if you're a resident in France or if you were caught by FrogPlod.
If you're caught by FrogPlod, then they're more likely to take your
licence off you and ban you from driving in France (after having paid
    the fine).

However, I've read in the past (in Bike, IIRC) a case of a German
rider in the UK brought before the beak in the UK where the judge did
exactly this. This was years ago, though (as I remember I was in the
    UK when I read this).

I don't believe so. I've "heard" that cameras where being developed
    though.

They can be adjusted for roadworks though, apparently.

Given the number of trips I do, I take a close interest in this.
At the moment fixed camera fines come to nothing as they can't get the
    details from DVLA.

That is, apparently, going to change eventually.

In your case though, as Hertz have supplied your details to the
Gendarmerie enforcement set up, perhaps you will get a letter inviting
you to put your hands up to it and cough up. Until the ability to tie up
your UK reg. car to the same name and address comes in to force you can
presumably safely ignore such penalty notices.

As I said the latest stuff I have seen from the Times (accepted sources
porl?) is only talking about following up to collect fines, not to
impose points under the miscreant's license issuing country arrangements
(EC only presumably). Though naturally our lot want that as well.

Des was muttering darkly some time ago about your speeding sins being
recorded until the day of reckoning some time in the future when all
this is in place. So the first time you get identifiably nicked they
collect on the rest. IMO I can see there being serious chain of evidence
problems with that, but we may have a Zeitgeistenpolizei state by then.

They could give you a ban from driving in France, but at this point
int time it wouldn't be valid here.

Could get very lawyer pocket lining arguing what constitutes raining
anyway. Different if pulled by a patrol I suppose.
    Logical.
