Bollocks. French speeding ticket

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Apr 20, 2008.

  1. Well, I assume so. I do recall going past one of those cameras slightly
faster than I should have done in the hire car, while on my way to Val
    d'Isere.

Anyway, Hertz has kindly billed me 19.99 euros for the privilege of
passing my name and address onto the French authorities. The cunts also
billed me four times, separately, so a chat with them and my CC company
    is top priority on Monday.

Assuming that Hertz is sent my speeding ticket, any idea what it's
likely to be? Or are the French authorities going to look at the UK
address and give up? I assume they'll bill Hertz.

They'll probably just grab the cost of the ticket from your credit card
(and I'm pretty sure that that and the 20 quid admin fee is part of
    their contract).

Before you go all UKRM on the credit card company, have a word with
Hertz - I had been double billed for the rental car upgrade in the US
and they refunded the erroneous charge within a couple of days after a
    polite enquiry.

  3. Yebbut, this is a French registered vehicle., Different thing.
That's a nasty thought, but unlikely as I just set the cruise to
slightly below 80 for almost all the way. The camera was on a bit of
speed-limited road and I did think as I went past it: "Ooops".

  4. I'm assuming it is indeed a clerical error. I'm also assuming Hertz
France won't be as accommodating as Hertz US.

Last time I got done in France, in a UK registered car, it was about
£70. Just a few hundred yards from the Belgian border, I got pulled over
there and then, didn't have any cash. They wouldn't let me go until I
had paid up. They made me wait until they had got their quota, then
escorted me to a cash machine to get the money. I knew enough French to
know that the cop in charge didn't like furriners, and there was no way
he was going to let me go.

I had a bad day in Germany once too, in a hire car. Pulled by an
unmarked car for speeding in roadworks, on the spot fine. They very
kindly showed me the video too. Then flashed by another camera. Then
pulled by a cop with a hairdryer.

I got a letter as a result of the fixed camera, which when I got it
translated said "you have been banned from driving in Germany for one
month". Strangely I didn't get a fine, or any charges from the hire co.

I don't know if it's true TOG, but I either read or heard that points on
licences are now being enabled "cross border/country" meaning the Frog
offence could result in point on your license. Like I say though, I've only
heard or read about it and it could be complete and utter shite.

It might be worth checking though.

Well, I called Hertz UK as these were the guys I booked the non-upgraded
vehicle through. Speaking to their customer support lady, I did get the
impression that I wasn't the first person that week to have this
    problem.

I called them on a Monday morning...

ITYF that they'll bill Hertz and in turn the fine will be passed on to
you. You could ignore it, but as Hertz is international, it's possible
that they'll have a debt collection system in the UK. The other thing
is, if you don't pay, don't expect to use their services anymore,
    worldwide, I'd have thought.

I wouldn't worry about the points though.

That wasn't my experience with an Italian ticket. I got the bill for
Hertz supplying the details and then I got the ticket directly from the
Italian plod, which I promptly ignored. Didn't hear another thing.

They've been talking about if for 10+ years.

I expect them to talk about it for another 10.

I've just thought about that. If Hertz had passed TOG's details onto
Plod, then it means that they didn't get the fine, so you're probably
    right.

Part of the rental agreement gives them the right to deduct fines
directly from the credit card they insist on using for payment
    guarantee.

The end of the decade is being talked about as a realistic target,
however, reports I have read have mentioned fine collection only, not
    penalty points harmonisation.

There still, fortunately, so few fixed cameras on our route to the
chateau that I know them all. Out of solidarity and to foster the
entente cordiale I always go through them exactly on the limit saluting.
There are five now IIRC. One extra last trip.

  16. I'm aware of that. Fair play. I'm just wondering if they send the ticket
    to Hertz or to me.

Hertz. At least, when I've had UK parking/speeding fines that's how
    it's worked.

Actually its all in place, was in court last week and saw 3 points on
    a frogs licence

Why it does not happen as a matter of course is that its a paper chase
    of monumental proportions.

What do you mean, you 'saw' three points? The French have a different
system in any case, starting out with 12 (IIRC) points, which are then
    deducted for each offence.
