Oh please, there's no call for that kind of gratuitous/grotesque image.

  3. More likely because they're dumbstruck at how much the feckers cost to
    fix.

Come on then, how did you do that?
You posted this yesterday and I only posted today that I've got a Golf
(can't remember admitting it to you before).

Oh, and BTW the quality of my Golf is nowhere near as good as SWMBO's
    Megane. (IMHO)

Thats the problem with this bike, the previous owner didn't do
anything to it other than change the oil. At 60,000 mls you'd surely
expect the rear shock to be sufferring, the exhausts to need
attention, the odd cable to need replacing... but when everythings
been done it is a great tool...

My 5 door 1.6 VW Golf is 20 years old, cost next to nothing to buy, about
**** all pound fifty per year to insure fully comp, does about a million
billion miles to the gallon, costs thirty pence and a stick of celery to
maintain each year, drives like a go-cart, has been over to the continent
and all over the UK, it might well be going to Perpignan later this year (if
it doesn't finally fall apart natch), it once managed to haul a shedload of
booze for a wedding reception back from France (steering and braking was
*interesting*), it's regularly had half of B&Q loaded into the back of it,
longer stuff has to poke out of the sunroof, it's called Cheapy Chariot and
    we love it :)

    Don't dis Golfs.

    So there :)

Bullocks. Not a myth, a well documented fact. Owners of old BMWs know
(or should know if they have a brain and have talked to anyone about
them) that the electrics are from hell. Once that's re-designed and
fixed with modern bits the engines and drive trains *will* last forever
with minimal maintainance. Modern (say, post 1990's?) BMWs have much
better electrics and mostly kept the bullet proof, under-stressed
mechanicals. Older Japanese bikes had disposable mechanicals and
questionable electrics. They too have greatly improved and have some
truly admirable bikes. However, their engines run under much greater
stress and therefore fail somewhat more spectacularly.

I've owned both Japanese and German bikes. The 1979 Honda CB750K
(purchased 1983) lasted 12 years of low maintainance. Lovely bike,
absolutely bulletproof, only had to redo the electricals once. The
1975/76 Kawasaki [something] I had before that was a pile of rusting,
broken, sagging shite. The 1984(85?) BMW K100RT (purchased 1997) would
still be going if Auvache (I think I sold it to Auvache) got off his
skinny arse and did something with it. Some electrics issues (see first
paragraph), but mechanically sound. As I remember it was running fine
until my accident. The 2000/2002 (first one was nicked) BMW R1150GS was
simply the best bike I ever owned. As a bonus it totalled the VW Golf
that hit me, but was itself repaired and as far as I know is still
running fine for the current owner.
Excellent bike, yes. Very tempted by it once, but definitely happy to
have purchased the 1150GS. The Pan is a slightly better long distance
machine, but much more limited in its usable terrain than the R1150GS.
Generally I'd have to agree, but not if you ammortise the initial price
over the expected lifespan of the bike. I had quite reasonably expected
that to be the last bike I would ever need to own, barring wanting more
toys in the garage. If you're planning to sell it early, the BMW will
keep its price much better too. The only people who think it depreciates
fast are the cunts in insurance companies who apply Jawa depreciation
rates to BMW bikes when the BMW gets nicked.

    cheers,
    Marc
