If left standing for a few days it wont start. Battery is fully
charged .Ignition lights come on but no response from starter button.
Leave standing for 5 mins with ignition off ,try again and it starts.
Sometimes this takes a few 5 minuite waits but it then runs
perfectly. It is only 30 months old with 13,000 miles on the clock and
    has full BMW service history.

  2. Can you hear the starter motor solenoid clicking?

Bad connection , lead, solenoid or maybe a defective battery or even a dead
spot in the starter. Thirty months, 13,000 miles, it's still under
warranty. You'd hate to "fix" the bike yourself only to find that it was an
itermittant problen that comes back in 6 months, when the warranty expires.
Bring it in now, and if the problem comes back outside the warranty period,
you've got a leg to stand on.

Jay's right, take it to the dealer.
If its dirt/corrosion in the starter button/switch, as I would
    suspect,
let BMW replace it now instead of fiddling with it yourself and having
    to replace it later.

No. The only sound is the click from the starter button when its
pressed.Since tried WD40 but to no effect. All starter motor
connections appear sound but i guess the next step is to remove and
test.Thinking back this problem first occured last year in the middle
of a long ride (200+miles)on a very hot day. After stopping for a break
had a no start but rocking the bike in gear allowed it to start. To any
other readers it not under warranty as it was for 12 months on the
2001 model year up to nov2001

  6. Um, usually that click *is* the solenoid. I've yet to come across a
starter button that make a noise.

That being the case, the most likely candidate is the main lead betwen
    solenoid and starter motor.

Could also be a faulty solenoid.

BMW twin have a solenoid on the starter. (The Bendix
drive doesn't engage until the solenoid is energized.)
There is also a relay that energizes the solenoid.

I'm curious if this bike is parked on the sidestand.
Is it possible that the sidestand safety switch is sticking
and has to be nudged a couple times to dislodge it?

Couple of items to check are the sidestand safety switch and the clutch
lever switch. BMW is noted for these being faulty as well as the neutral
switch at the back of the transmission.

  9. I'd take it to the stealer if it was under warranty..
But if not - check the neutral safety switch & sidestand cutout..
Does it make a difference if you try starting it in N or in 1st?
I'd take this opportunity to bypass all that hoo-ha now, regardless.
