My BMW K100RS-16v (1991) has had a persistant fault with the ABS
computer for years, and the fault lights flash. Resetting the computer
works for a very short time, and then it is back again and is getting
worse. The local BMW workshop thinks the computer is on the fritz. The
new price for the computer is eye watering. Anyone know of any second
hand ones - same as (IIRC) the earlier 2V models.
Brakes still work, so I could always just take the bulbs out of the
    dash...

How about take out the ABS system and just go straight from the master
cylinder to the brake calipers. Save yourself a shit tin of weight and it'l
    feel better too!

The ECU might refuse to start the engine when there's no ping response from
    the ABS unit

Two separate computers in these models, one for engine management and one
    for ABS.

How's your battery? If the battery had suffered heavy load on my R1100, the
ABS lights would go into fault mode until the charge was brought up. If the
battery is getting old, it might be continually below the level to keep the
    ABS circuit healthy.

    I really liked the ABS.

One problem is recertification (I am actually in NZ) of the bike as
it is now a non-abs bike. Am giving it a serious look though. Be a
good chance to put braided lines on it as well.

Battery is about 6 months old, and when not in use for a while, I put
it on the battery Tender. In a previous time, it faulted when I
    changed the battery
The shop reset the computer and cleared teh fault codes, and (touch
wood) it is ok on the way home tonight, with no guarentees as to how
long it will last. We shall see.
