The new BMW F800GS is expected to be unveiled at next weekend's Milan
Motorcycle Show. The following photos have turned up, and appear to be
    the real deal.

Looks like they're keeping the F650GS in the lineup, but it will be a
650 in name only. Looks like it is going to be a lower spec version
    using the same 800cc engine.

Well that sux. Oh well, Aprilia and Suzuki have 2 good alternatives
anyway, even if you will have to spend some bucks to GS them

Aye, that would be right. :-(

The only current model BM that I'd be remotely likely to buy and they go
    and stuff it up.

Mark you, any time I think about a 650 BM, I remind myself that a Honda
    SL230 is lots cheaper.

I'm not a dirter, but why (I wonder) would they go to the trouble of
changing the road F800's nice belt drive to a sticky, greasy,
    dirt-attracting chain for off-road use?

Is the belt drive not good for bush-bashing?

    Rocks can damage the belt.

Name me one serious dirt bike that has a belt.

Do rocks and dirt damage belts more than they damage chains?

Yes. The pulley grooves can also fill up with mud.

Name me one user of floppy disks who insisted on using them after the
invention of the USB Flash drive. Technology changes.

Maybe next year+2, every BMW (and other) dirt bike WILL be belted.
On the F800, the belt drives are AFAIK, eternal. Why not use them on
dirt bikes if rocks are (perhaps) not an issue?

And if rocks ARE an issue, why not fit a rock guard under the belt?

That *might* make sense if belt drives had been invented in the last
couple of years and were having technophobe take up issues. They
weren't. They've been around since Johno was a young bloke.

Aside from the objections already raised about the impact of stones on
belts and mud in grooves, I'd also note that the size of the rear pulley
adds a large amount of unsprung weight which isn't a good thing for a
dirt bike. They go to a lot of trouble to minimise weight on chookies
    for a reason.

The extra coupla kgs is neither here nor there on a hogly weighing in at
300+ kg it *is* consequential on a dirt bike weighing 150 odd wet.

Your suggestions of guards and etc just keeping stacking the weight on.
Chains weigh less than belts and are more robust at the expense of
needing to be relaced more often. Not usually an issue given off road
bikes don't usually do big km's.

The GS style stuff being in between road and dirt can get away with some
compromises, so yeah it's not the end of the world for a GS, but if
you're going to pay the weight penalty you're better off with a shafty
and be done with it. As the 1200GS has...

A belt isn't a bad solution for a hogly - the low HP means you're not
stressing the technology capability. Ditto the F650. Once you start
having some grunt AND taking it off road its not going to be optimal.

Belts are pretty much already in use on everything it makes sense to use
    them on with few exceptions.

    ;-P You silly silly man.

I know which of the DR and the soft tail I'd rather do the Birdsville
    track on !

Having said that I'd take a cruisr over a dirt road in preference to a
serious sports bike anyday - the setup that makes them quick on tar
    makes them shite on dirt...
