That is the strangest thing I've heard in quite a while, and I would
never, ever, ever have guessed that in a million years. And I thought
    R-bike electrics were bad!

(Oh, is it some kind of load-shedding arrangement?)

  8. "Load-shed"?
Is that a type of cum spray booth?

Thanks, but I've got a Hayes manual for it - the guy I bought the bike
off gave it to me when he sold it to me.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've removed the battery/starter/alternator & given the earth leads a
good clean, and the problem *seems* to have gone away. I haven't had
time to do more than about 100k's owing to other matters getting in the
way {damn inconvenient babies, getting born while I'm trying to find
time to fix my bike!}, but the earth may have been the problem.

I'll also bear in mind the comments about the starter motor brushes
should it reoccur in the near future.

    Appreciate the input from all.
